Xpeng G9: which version to buy and why

The Xpeng G9 has one generation (from August 2022, still in production) as a SUV 5-doors with five electric versions. The buying choice is not “which generation,” because there is only one; it is which of the five named versions matches how you use the car. Two of those five share the name AT and must be split by power: AT 551 hp (from August 2022) versus AT 575 hp (from March 2025).

Specs that actually separate the five versions

Use this table as the shortlist. Displacement, cylinders, cylinder layout, and boost are not measured on any G9 version in this dataset. Fuel is Electro on all five. Gearbox is Automatic with 1 ratio on all five. CO2 is 0 on all five.

Generations: one generation, two date clusters

1 generation (August 2022–ongoing), SUV 5-doors, five versions. There is no second generation in the data. What changes over time is the mix of versions, not the generation count.

From August 2022 the line-up is three cars: AT RWD 98 kWh, AT 551 hp, and AT RWD 78.2 kWh. From March 2025 two more join: AT RWD and AT 575 hp. If you are choosing a car built after March 2025, all five names can appear. If you are choosing an earlier car, only the first three names apply.

Engine and drive: RWD cluster versus AWD cluster

The arithmetic splits the catalogue into two clusters.

RWD cluster (three versions). AT RWD 98 kWh and AT RWD 78.2 kWh are identical on every measured power figure: 313 hp, 230 kW, 430 Nm, 6.4 s to 100 km/h, 200 km/h, RWD, Automatic 1. The only named difference is in the version title: 98 kWh versus 78.2 kWh, a gap of 19.8 kWh in the name. AT RWD (from March 2025) is the RWD car with more power: +38 hp and +28 kW versus the 313 hp pair (351 vs 313 hp; 258 vs 230 kW), and +44 Nm (474 vs 430). It is still RWD, still Automatic 1, still Electro, still 200 km/h.

AWD cluster (two versions, both named AT). AT 551 hp has 551 hp / 405 kW / 717 Nm. AT 575 hp has 575 hp / 422 kW / 709 Nm. Versus the matching-era RWD car, AWD is the large step: AT 551 hp versus AT RWD 98 kWh (or AT RWD 78.2 kWh) is +238 hp, +175 kW, +287 Nm. AT 575 hp versus AT RWD is +224 hp, +164 kW, +235 Nm.

Inside the AWD pair the later AT 575 hp is not a straight upgrade on every number. It has +24 hp and +17 kW versus AT 551 hp, but torque is 8 Nm lower (709 vs 717). If peak newton-metres is the criterion, the earlier AT 551 hp still leads the whole G9 line-up.

Displacement, cylinders, layout, and boost remain not measured on every version, so those fields cannot break a tie.

Performance and economy: 0–100, top speed, mpg

Top speed does not help you choose: every version is 200 km/h.

0–100 km/h does. Fastest is AT 551 hp at 3.9 s. Next is AT 575 hp at 4.2 s — 0.3 s slower than the earlier AWD car despite +24 hp. The 313 hp RWD pair, AT RWD 98 kWh and AT RWD 78.2 kWh, both take 6.4 s: 2.5 s slower than AT 551 hp and 2.2 s slower than AT 575 hp. AT RWD takes 6.6 s: 0.2 s slower than the 313 hp RWD pair even though it has +38 hp, and 2.4 s slower than AT 575 hp.

City, highway, and combined consumption are not measured on any version. There is no mpg figure in the data to rank economy. Tank volume is not measured on any version. CO2 is 0 on all five, so emissions do not separate them.

Dimensions and weight: only the March 2025 pair is measured

Kerb weight, gross weight, and ground clearance are not measured on AT RWD 98 kWh, AT 551 hp, and AT RWD 78.2 kWh. Wheel sizes are measured on those three: 255/55 R19 and 255/45 R21 on each. On AT RWD and AT 575 hp, wheel sizes are not measured.

On the two versions that do have mass and clearance:

AWD AT 575 hp is 185 kg heavier at the kerb and 180 kg heavier gross than AT RWD. Payload is 5 kg lower. Ground clearance is the same 155 mm, so ride height does not decide the pair.

Weight per horsepower (kerb ÷ hp), only where kerb is measured: AT RWD is 2210 / 351 ≈ 6.30 kg/hp. AT 575 hp is 2395 / 575 ≈ 4.17 kg/hp. The AWD car carries about 2.13 kg less per horsepower, which matches the 2.4 s gap in 0–100 (4.2 s vs 6.6 s).

Front and rear suspension is Independent, pneumatic on all five. Front brakes are Ventilated disc on all five. Rear brakes are Disc ventilated on all five. Chassis hardware does not separate versions.

Which version to choose

Choose AT RWD 98 kWh if you want RWD, the 313 hp / 430 Nm / 6.4 s package, and the larger battery figure in the name (98 kWh). Versus AT RWD 78.2 kWh every measured spec is the same; the named battery is 19.8 kWh higher. Versus AT 551 hp you give up 238 hp, 287 Nm, AWD, and 2.5 s of 0–100. Kerb weight, gross weight, and clearance are not measured on this version.

Choose AT RWD 78.2 kWh if you want the same 313 hp / 230 kW / 430 Nm / 6.4 s / RWD numbers as AT RWD 98 kWh and accept the smaller battery figure in the name (78.2 kWh). It is not a weaker motor in this dataset; it is the same motor figures with a different kWh label. Wheels match the 98 kWh car: 255/55 R19 and 255/45 R21. Mass and clearance are not measured.

Choose AT (551 hp) if 0–100 time and peak torque are the priority and the car is from the August 2022 cluster. It is the fastest G9 in the data (3.9 s) and the highest torque (717 Nm). Versus AT 575 hp it is 24 hp and 17 kW down, 8 Nm up, and 0.3 s quicker to 100 km/h. Versus the 313 hp RWD pair it is +238 hp and AWD instead of RWD. Weight and clearance are not measured, so you cannot check kg/hp on this version.

Choose AT RWD if you want RWD from March 2025 with the highest RWD output: 351 hp / 258 kW / 474 Nm. Versus the 313 hp RWD pair that is +38 hp and +44 Nm, but 0–100 is 6.6 s, 0.2 s slower, so the extra power does not buy a quicker sprint in these figures. What it does buy in the data is measured mass: 2210 kg kerb, 2730 kg gross, 155 mm clearance. Wheel sizes are not measured. Versus AT 575 hp you save 185 kg at the kerb and keep the same 155 mm clearance, at the cost of 224 hp, AWD, and 2.4 s to 100 km/h.

Choose AT (575 hp) if you want AWD from March 2025 and the highest horsepower in the catalogue (575 hp / 422 kW). Versus AT 551 hp you gain 24 hp and lose 8 Nm and 0.3 s of sprint. Versus AT RWD you gain AWD, 224 hp, and 2.4 s, and you add 185 kg. Payload is almost the same (515 kg vs 520 kg). This is the only AWD version with measured kerb and gross weight. Wheel sizes are not measured. Consumption remains not measured.

If you only remember one rule: RWD versus AWD is the large split (hundreds of horsepower and about 2.2–2.5 s in 0–100). Inside RWD, AT RWD 98 kWh versus AT RWD 78.2 kWh is a named battery split with identical motor figures; AT RWD is the later, more powerful RWD with measured weight but a slightly slower 6.6 s sprint. Inside AWD, AT 551 hp is the quicker, higher-torque car; AT 575 hp is the higher-hp, heavier, later car. Prices are not in this dataset, so “what the extra money buys” can only mean what the extra horsepower, newton-metres, drive type, named kWh, and (where measured) kilograms buy.
