Every version in the catalogue, without exception, is a Gasoline four-cylinder with FWD — front-wheel drive. Power grows from 60 hp in the 1979 car to 207 hp in the current one, so the model's history is essentially the story of a small hatchback tripling its output while remaining a compact front-driver.

2. Generations

1 generation (1979-01-01 – 1981-01-31), Mini 3-doors, 1 version. The starting point: a 1272 cc Carburetor engine with 2 valves per cylinder producing 60 hp at 6000 rpm, driving a 4-speed Manual gearbox. Fuel grade is 92.

2 generation (1981-01-01 – 1994-01-31), Mini 3-doors, 1 version. The longest-lived generation in the data — thirteen years. Same 1272 cc displacement, output raised to 75 hp, still 4-speed Manual, still fuel grade 92. Much of this car's data is not recorded (see the tables below).

3 generation (1998-03-01 – 1999-09-30), Mini 3-doors, 1 version. The first modern GTI in the catalogue: a 1598 cc naturally aspirated unit (boost: No) with Distributed injection (multi-point), 4 valves per cylinder, 120 hp, 5-speed Manual.

3 generation, restyling (1999-01-01 – 2001-12-31), Mini 5-doors, 1 version. The restyling moves the body to five doors and raises output to 125 hp from the same 1598 cc block, with 0–100 km/h down to 8.7 s and top speed up to 205 km/h.

4 generation (2006-05-01 – 2009-05-31), Mini 5-doors, 4 versions. The turbocharged era begins: 1781 cc, Turbo, 5 valves per cylinder, Distributed injection (multi-point). Two power levels are recorded — 150 hp and 180 hp — each in two catalogue entries, all with 5-speed Manual.

5 generation (2009-09-01 – 2014-03-31), Mini 5-doors, 2 versions. Downsizing: a 1390 cc Turbo engine with Direct injection (direct) and 180 hp, paired exclusively with a 7-speed Robotic gearbox.

Note on duplicates within one generation: the 4 generation lists two 1.8 MT entries at 150 hp (210 Nm and 220 Nm) and two at 180 hp (both 235 Nm, at 5500 rpm and 5800 rpm respectively). 6. Which version to choose

All comparisons below are arithmetic on the figures above.

If you want the quickest and the newest: 2.0 DSG (207 hp, 6 generation restyling). It is the only version still in production and the outright fastest to 100 km/h at 6.5 s — 0.2 s ahead of the 200 hp and 192 hp cars, and 6.4 s ahead of the original 60 hp 1.3 MT. It also carries the highest kerb weight in the range, 1361 kg, which is 586 kg more than the 1 generation car. Its combined consumption of 6.8 l/100 km is, notably, higher than every 6-generation and 5-generation-restyling version — the 1.8 DSG at 5.6 l/100 km uses 1.2 l/100 km less.

If economy matters most: 1.8 DSG (192 hp, 5 generation restyling), 5.6 l/100 km combined and 129 g/km CO₂ — the lowest of both figures anywhere in the model. With a 45-litre tank, that combined figure works out to a longer range than any 6-generation car, which carry only 40 litres. Its manual sibling, the 1.8 MT, costs 0.4 l/100 km more in the combined cycle (6.0) and 10 g/km more CO₂, for identical 192 hp, 320 Nm, 6.7 s and 236 km/h — the gearbox is the whole difference in the numbers.

If you want a manual: 2.0 MT (200 hp, 6 generation) is the most powerful manual recorded, and the only one that reaches 240 km/h. Against the 2.0L DSG of the same generation it gives up 6 Nm (320 vs 326) and gains 2 km/h of top speed, but drinks 0.5 l/100 km more combined (6.3 vs 5.8) and emits 10 g/km more CO₂. It is also 30 kg lighter at the kerb, 1325 vs 1355 kg. And it is the only version in the entire catalogue with recorded wheel sizes — 215/45 R17 and 215/40 R18.

The high-torque middle ground: 5 generation restyling versus 6 generation. Going from 192 hp to 200 hp buys nothing in acceleration — both do 6.7 s — and the 6-generation cars are 45–75 kg heavier at the kerb. What the newer car gains is 4 km/h of top speed on the manual (240 vs 236) and a larger 1984 cc engine; what it loses is 5 litres of tank capacity and, on the manual, 0.3 l/100 km of combined economy.

The 5 generation 1.4 DSG (180 hp) is the efficiency outlier of its era: 5.9 l/100 km combined from a 1390 cc engine, the smallest turbocharged displacement here, with 6.9 s to 100 km/h. It is only 0.2 s slower than the 192 and 200 hp cars despite giving up 12–20 hp, and at 1269 kg it is the lightest of all the direct-injection versions.

Older cars for character. The 4 generation 1.8 MT in 180 hp form does 7.5 s and 225 km/h but needs 7.9 l/100 km combined — 2.3 l/100 km more than the best modern version — and is the only generation with 5 valves per cylinder. The naturally aspirated 3 generation restyling 1.6 MT (125 hp, boost: No) is 8.7 s and 205 km/h at 886 kg, the lightest car in the range after the 1 generation. The 1.3 MT cars of the 1 and 2 generations, at 60 and 75 hp, belong to a different category of performance entirely: 12.9 s and 154 km/h for the earlier one, with no acceleration figure recorded for the later.
