Generations: what actually changed on the numbers

Every engine here is a 4-cylinder Inline, Front, transverse. Boost is Turbo unless marked No. Gearboxes are 4/5/6-speed as listed. Drive is FWD on every row.

1 generation (1999–2003, Compact Van) and 1 generation, restyling (2003–2005, Compact Van) share the same 150 mm ground clearance and 58 l tank. The restyle does not invent a new body class. What it adds is an Automatic path: 1.6 AT 101 hp, 1.8 AT 125 hp, 2.2 AT 147 hp Gasoline, plus 2.0 AT 101 hp and 2.2 AT 125 hp Diesel. The facelift 2.0 MT Gasoline is 200 hp versus 192 hp on the pre-facelift 2.0 MT — 8 hp more on the same 1998 cm³ Turbo Inline 4, same 8.2 s to 100 km/h and 220 km/h top speed, same 10.1 l/100 km mixed. The 1.8 MT 125 hp is unchanged at 11.5 s / 188 km/h / 8.6 mixed. The 2.0 MT 82 hp Diesel (17.0 s, 160 km/h) is a first-generation-only slow diesel; the restyle starts Diesel at 2.0 MT 101 hp (14.0 s, 175 km/h).

2 generation (2005–2008, Compact Van) is where weight and power both jump. The 1.6 MT 105 hp sits at 1316 kg kerb — 4 kg lighter than 1 generation 1.6 MT 101 hp (1320 kg) with 4 hp more. The 2.0 MT 200 hp (1998 cm³, Turbo, 9.0 s, 225 km/h) and 2.0 MT 240 hp (7.8 s, 231 km/h, 1595 kg) are the catalogue’s performance peak. Ground clearance is 160 mm on most of this generation, 150 mm on 2.0 MT 240 hp. Eco class is not measured on several petrol versions.

2 generation, restyling (2008–2010, Compact Van) drops the 200/240 hp 2.0 MT pair and the 2.2 petrol. What remains is a short, light range: 1.6 MT 115 hp (1435 kg, 13.4 s, 185 km/h), 1.8 MT 140 hp (1440 kg, 11.5 s, 197 km/h), and two 1.7 MT Diesels at 110 hp and 125 hp, both 12.3 s and 189 km/h. Clearance is 150 mm on the petrols and 160 mm on the diesels. Both diesels are Euro 5; both petrols are Euro 4 with 187 g/km CO2.

3 generation (2011–2016, Compact Van) is the widest engine board: twelve versions. Turbo Gasoline 1.4 (120 and 140 hp), 1.6 (170 and 200 hp), Diesel 1.6 136 hp and 2.0 at 110 / 130 / 165 / 195 hp. Clearance is 165 mm across the board. Kerb is split: 1571 kg on several 140 hp petrol and 2.0 diesel rows, 1733 kg on 1.4 MT 120 hp and 2.0 MT 165 hp, 1664 kg on 1.6 AT 170 hp; kerb is not measured on 1.6 MT 170 hp, 1.6 MT 200 hp and 1.6 MT 136 hp Diesel.

3 generation, restyling (2016–2018) is labelled Minivan, not Compact Van. Five versions only. Petrol is one engine: 1364 cm³, 140 hp, 200 Nm, sold as 1.4 AT and 1.4 MT. Diesel is 1.6 MT 136 hp and 2.0 170 hp as 2.0 MT / 2.0 AT. All five are Euro 6. Clearance is 160 mm except 1.6 MT at 165 mm. Kerb rises versus the lightest 3 generation petrol: 1628 kg on both 140 hp 1.4s versus 1571 kg on 3 generation 1.4 AT / 1.4 MT 140 hp — 57 kg more for the same 140 hp, 10.8–10.9 s and 197–200 km/h.

Heaviest measured: restyle 2.0 AT 170 hp 1803 kg, then 3 generation 1.4 MT 120 hp and 2.0 MT 165 hp 1733 kg, restyle 2.0 MT 170 hp 1748 kg, restyle 1.6 MT 1701 kg.

Gross: restyle 2.0 AT 2470 kg (highest), restyle 2.0 MT 2455, 3 generation 1.4 MT 120 hp and 2.0 MT 165 hp 2425. Lowest measured gross: 1 generation 1.6 101 hp 1950 kg.

Kerb not measured: both LPG 1.6 MT 97 hp; 3 generation 1.6 MT 170 hp, 1.6 MT 200 hp, 1.6 MT 136 hp Diesel; 2 generation 1.9 MT 120 hp. Gross not measured on those same rows.

kg per hp (kerb ÷ hp), where kerb exists: 2 generation 2.0 MT 240 hp = 6.65 kg/hp; 2.0 MT 200 hp = 7.19; 3 generation 2.0 MT 195 hp = 8.06; restyle 2.0 MT 170 hp = 10.28; restyle 1.4 140 hp = 11.63; restyle 1.6 MT 136 hp = 12.51; 3 generation 1.4 MT 120 hp = 14.44; 1 generation 2.0 MT 82 hp = 17.62.

Payload (gross − kerb), measured pairs: restyle 1.4 AT 2315 − 1628 = 687 kg; restyle 1.4 MT 2285 − 1628 = 657 kg; restyle 1.6 MT 2380 − 1701 = 679 kg; restyle 2.0 MT 2455 − 1748 = 707 kg; restyle 2.0 AT 2470 − 1803 = 667 kg. 3 generation 1.4 AT 140 hp 2150 − 1571 = 579 kg — 108 kg less payload than restyle 1.4 AT. 2 generation 1.6 MT 105 hp 2075 − 1316 = 759 kg, the largest measured payload in this set.

Front/rear suspension is Independent, spring on the versions that list it in 3rd generation data. Front brakes Ventilated disc; rear listed as Disc ventilated. Those chassis labels do not differ between the five restyle versions, so they do not decide the purchase.

Which version to choose

Daily petrol, newest body. 3 generation, restyling 1.4 MT 140 hp: 10.8 s, 200 km/h, 6.7 mixed, 158 g/km, Euro 6, 1628 kg. 1.4 AT is the same engine with Automatic 6: +0.1 s, −3 km/h (197), +0.2 mixed, +2 g/km, same kerb, +30 kg gross. If you want two pedals, 1.4 AT is the only petrol automatic in the 2016–2018 Minivan.

Daily diesel, newest body. 1.6 MT 136 hp: 4.7 mixed, 125 g/km, 11.6 s, 191 km/h, 165 mm clearance (5 mm more than the restyle 1.4/2.0). 2.0 MT 170 hp buys 34 hp and 80 Nm more than the 136 hp diesel (170 − 136; 400 − 320), 1.8 s quicker (9.8 vs 11.6), 17 km/h more top speed, at +0.5 mixed (5.2 vs 4.7) and +12 g/km (137 vs 125), +47 kg kerb (1748 vs 1701). 2.0 AT adds Automatic 6: 10.1 s, 205 km/h, 6.1 mixed, 161 g/km, 1803 kg — 55 kg heavier than 2.0 MT, 0.9 mixed more, 24 g/km more. The automatic 2.0 diesel’s CO2 (161) is 1 g above restyle 1.4 AT petrol (160), so it is not an emissions shortcut versus the 140 hp petrol automatic.

Same 140 hp petrol, 3 generation versus restyle. 3 generation 1.4 MT 140 hp: 10.8 s, 200 km/h, 6.7 mixed, 158 g/km, Euro 5, 1571 kg, 165 mm. Restyle 1.4 MT: identical 10.8 s / 200 km/h / 6.7 mixed / 158 g/km, Euro 6, 1628 kg, 160 mm. You pay 57 kg and 5 mm of clearance for Euro 6 and the Minivan label; pace and mixed mpg do not move. 3 generation 1.4 AT 140 hp uses 7.2 mixed and 169 g/km versus restyle 1.4 AT 6.9 and 160 — the restyle automatic is 0.3 mixed and 9 g/km cleaner, but 57 kg heavier (1628 vs 1571) with 5 mm less clearance.

Do not buy 3 generation 1.4 MT 120 hp if 140 hp is on the same used list. 120 hp: 11.9 s, 190 km/h, 6.7 mixed, CO2 not measured, Euro 5, 1733 kg. The 140 hp 1.4 MT is 1.1 s quicker, 10 km/h faster, same 6.7 mixed, 162 kg lighter. Specific output 87.98 versus 102.6 hp/l. The 120 hp car is the heavier, slower 1.4.

Fastest family petrol in 3 generation. 1.6 MT 200 hp: 8.9 s, 225 km/h, 7.0 mixed, 300 Nm, fuel 95, Euro 5; kerb, gross and CO2 not measured. 1.6 MT 170 hp: 9.2 s, 212 km/h, 6.6 mixed, 280 Nm, fuel 98, Euro 5; kerb/gross/CO2 not measured. The 200 hp car is 0.3 s and 13 km/h ahead at +0.4 mixed; it runs 95, the 170 hp manual wants 98. 1.6 AT 170 hp: 9.6 s, 208 km/h, 7.6 mixed, 169 g/km, Euro 6, 1664 kg — the only Euro 6 petrol automatic in 3 generation, 1.0 mixed more than the 170 hp manual.

Fastest diesel in 3 generation. 2.0 MT 195 hp: 8.9 s, 218 km/h, 5.6 mixed, 149 g/km, Euro 4, 1571 kg, 400 Nm — same 8.9 s as 1.6 MT 200 hp petrol, 1.4 mixed less, 162 kg lighter than restyle 1.6 MT 136 hp (kerb measured). 2.0 MT 165 hp matches restyle 2.0 MT 170 hp at 9.8 s and 208 km/h with 5.3 mixed (0.1 more than restyle 5.2) but Euro 5 and 1733 kg. 2.0 MT 110 hp is the slow diesel of this generation: 12.5 s, 183 km/h, 5.1 mixed, 134 g/km, Euro 4, 1571 kg — 85 hp down on the 195 hp 2.0 MT, 3.6 s slower, 0.5 mixed better.

2 generation if you want the lightest or the quickest Zafira in the file. 1.6 MT 105 hp is 1316 kg, 14.3 s, 176 km/h, 7.1 mixed — light, not fast. 2.0 MT 240 hp is 7.8 s, 231 km/h, 9.6 mixed, 6.65 kg/hp, 150 mm clearance, 1595 kg. 2.0 MT 200 hp is 9.0 s, 225 km/h, 9.5 mixed, 1437 kg. Neither 2.0 Turbo petrol has eco class or CO2 measured. 1.8 MT 140 hp (11.5 s, 197 km/h, 7.6 mixed, 1336 kg) is 167 kg lighter than 1.8 DSG 140 hp (12.9 s, 7.2 mixed, 1503 kg): the Robotic 5 costs 1.4 s and 167 kg for 0.4 mixed saved.

2 generation, restyling — short list. Petrol choice is 1.8 MT 140 hp over 1.6 MT 115 hp: +25 hp, −1.9 s (11.5 vs 13.4), +12 km/h, +0.2 mixed (7.3 vs 7.1), +5 kg. Diesel: 1.7 MT 110 hp and 1.7 MT 125 hp share 12.3 s and 189 km/h; the 125 hp row uses 5.7 mixed versus 5.1, so the extra 15 hp and 20 Nm (280 vs 260) do not buy a quicker sprint in this data, only +0.6 mixed. Prefer 1.7 MT 110 hp unless you specifically need 125 hp / 280 Nm.

1 generation — when the later vans are too new or too heavy. 1.8 MT 125 hp (11.5 s, 188 km/h, 8.6 mixed, 1370 kg) is the measured petrol sweet spot; 1.8 MT 116 hp is 0.5 s slower (12.0 s), 4 km/h slower, mpg not measured. 2.2 MT 147 hp Gasoline is 10.0 s and 200 km/h at 8.9 mixed, 1400 kg — 1.5 s quicker than the 125 hp 1.8 for +0.3 mixed and +30 kg. 2.0 MT 192 hp (1 generation) / 200 hp (restyle) is 8.2 s / 220 km/h / 10.1 mixed / 1540 kg. Diesel: skip 2.0 MT 82 hp (17.0 s, 160 km/h, mpg not measured). 2.0 MT 101 hp is 14.0 s, 175 km/h, 6.6 mixed. 2.2 MT 125 hp Diesel is 11.5 s, 187 km/h, 6.9 mixed, 1550 kg — same 11.5 s as petrol 1.8 MT 125 hp with 1.7 mixed less. LPG 1.6 MT 97 hp: 0–100, top speed, torque, mpg, CO2, eco, kerb, gross all not measured on both generations — buy it only for fuel type, not for a measured pace or economy claim.

Automatic without a 2016–2018 diesel. 3 generation 1.4 AT 140 hp or 1.6 AT 170 hp (Euro 6, 9.6 s). Older: 2 generation 2.2 AT 150 hp (11.6 s, 8.6 mixed, Automatic 4); 1 generation, restyling 1.6 AT 101 hp (13.0 s, 8.3 mixed, 200 g/km). Restyle 2.0 AT / 1.8 AT / 2.2 AT Diesels and petrols with Automatic 4 have several mpg and 0–100 fields not measured — do not treat those gaps as “no such parameter”.

Reliability / problems. This catalogue has no failure rates, recall counts or workshop times.
