Power per litre (hp ÷ displacement in litres):

The 3.9 AT is the only engine that makes peak torque at 2800 rpm instead of 3800–4000. That is 1000–1200 rpm earlier than the 3.5 AT 300 Nm tune and 1200 rpm earlier than the 3.4 AT. For a van, that is the largest measured difference in the powertrain set.

What the extra 24 hp on that 3.5 AT actually buys versus the light 3.4 AT:

So if the buying question is “is the second-generation 3.5 AT quicker than a 1770 kg first-generation 3.4 AT?”, the only paired numbers say no: 10.5 s vs 10 s.
