Engine: power per litre and what extra displacement buys

3 generation. The light 2.4 AT (1600 kg) and the heavier 2.4 AT (1680 kg) share 150 hp from 2429 cc: 61.8 hp/l. That is the densest naturally aspirated engine in the whole Voyager table. The 3.0 AT pair adds only 2 hp (152 vs 150) for 543 cc more: 51.1 hp/l. Torque rises 13 Nm (226 → 239). Both stay on a 3-speed Automatic and FWD. Stepping to 3.3 AT (160 hp, 275 Nm, 3301 cc) buys 8 hp and 36 Nm over 3.0 AT, plus a 4-speed Automatic instead of 3. Specific output falls to 48.5 hp/l. The 3.8 AT is the catalogue peak: 166 hp, 308 Nm, 3778 cc, 43.9 hp/l. Versus the 1680 kg 3.3 AT that is +6 hp, +33 Nm, +477 cc, AWD instead of FWD, and +195 kg (1875 − 1680). Peak power arrives earlier: 4300 rpm versus 4850 on 3.3 AT and 5200 on 2.4 AT / 3.0 AT. Peak torque is at 3100 rpm versus 3250 / 4000.

Fuel grade is a real fork: both 2.4 AT rows specify 95; every V-shaped six in 3 generation specifies 92.

2 generation. The 2.5 AT at 98 hp / 2501 cc is 39.2 hp/l and the weakest car of that generation. The two 3.0 AT rows (144 hp, 2972 cc) are 48.5 hp/l — same specific output as 3 generation 3.3 AT, but 8 hp and 4 hp behind the later 3.0 AT (152 hp) and 3.3 AT (160 hp). Torque on 2 generation 3.0 AT is 235 Nm at 2800 rpm; 3 generation 3.0 AT is 239 Nm at 4000 rpm (+4 Nm, peak 1200 rpm later).

The 2 generation 3.3 AT at 165 hp (121 kW) is 5 hp above 3 generation 3.3 AT (160 hp). Torque is the other way: 263 Nm versus 275 Nm (−12 Nm). The AWD 3.3 AT in 2 generation is the odd one: 152 hp and 251 Nm13 hp and 12 Nm below the FWD 3.3 AT twins at 165 hp / 263 Nm. Versus 3 generation 3.3 AT it is 8 hp down and 24 Nm down.

2 generation 3.8 AT matches the 165 hp FWD 3.3 AT on power but adds 26 Nm (289 vs 263) and 477 cc. It does not add AWD — drive stays FWD. 3 generation 3.8 AT then adds 1 hp, 19 Nm (308 − 289), and switches to AWD.

1 generation. The 2.2 AT / 2.2 MT pair is the floor: 94 hp, 165 Nm, 2213 cc, 42.5 hp/l. Naturally aspirated 2.5 AT / 2.5 MT add 8 hp and 18 Nm for 288 cc. The Turbo 2.5 AT and Turbo 2.5 MT jump to 152 hp and 244 Nm+50 hp and +61 Nm versus the non-turbo 2.5, same 2501 cc, compression 7.8 versus 9.0. Specific output 60.8 hp/l, close to 3 generation 2.4 AT (61.8 hp/l) but with Turbo instead of 16 valves (3 generation 2.4 AT has 4 valves per cylinder; 1 generation 2.5 has 2). Torque peak on the Turbo pair is 2000 rpm, the lowest in the catalogue.

1 generation 3.0 AT / 3.0 MT: 143 hp, 232 Nm. Versus 2 generation 3.0 AT that is −1 hp and −3 Nm. Versus 3 generation 3.0 AT: −9 hp and −7 Nm. 1 generation 3.3 AT / 3.3 MT: 152 hp, 251 Nm — identical to 2 generation AWD 3.3 AT, and 13 hp / 12 Nm below 2 generation FWD 3.3 AT at 165 hp. Gearbox on 1 generation 3.3 AT is Automatic, 3; from 2 generation the FWD and AWD 3.3 AT cars use Automatic, 4.

Manuals exist only in 1 generation: 2.2 MT, 2.5 MT (102 hp), 2.5 MT (152 hp Turbo), 3.0 MT, 3.3 MT. From 1991 every listed Voyager is Automatic.

So the extra 10 hp from 3 generation 2.4 AT (150) to 3.3 AT (160), and the extra 2 hp from 2.4 AT to 3.0 AT, do not show a higher recorded top speed: the measured figure stays 175 km/h. You cannot rank 0–100 or mpg from this catalogue; those fields are empty, not “zero”.

Dimensions and weight: kg per horsepower

Ground clearance: 130 mm through 1 and 2 generation, 140 mm in 3 generation (+10 mm). Tank: not measured in 1 generation; 75 l on every 2 and 3 generation version. Wheel sizes: not measured on all. Gross weight: not measured on all.

Kerb weight is measured from 2 generation on. Lightest: 2 generation 2.5 AT and light 3.0 AT, both 1498 kg. Heaviest: 3 generation 3.8 AT at 1875 kg377 kg more than 1498 kg.

Kg per hp (kerb / hp), lower is less mass per unit of power:

Within 3 generation, the light 3.3 AT (1605 kg) undercuts the light 2.4 AT (1600 kg) on kg/hp (10.03 vs 10.67) because it has 10 hp more at almost the same mass (+5 kg). The 3.8 AT is the slowest kg/hp in that generation because AWD and 1875 kg swallow the 16 hp gap over 2.4 AT.

Same engine, two weights in 3 generation: 2.4 AT 1680 vs 1600 = 80 kg; 3.0 AT 1669 vs 1605 = 64 kg; 3.3 AT 1680 vs 1605 = 75 kg. Power, torque, gears, and drive do not change inside each pair — only kerb weight. Prefer the lighter row of the same name if the rest of the spec matches.

2 generation AWD 3.3 AT at 1748 kg is 132 kg heavier than FWD 3.3 AT at 1616 kg, and 13 hp weaker. 3 generation AWD 3.8 AT at 1875 kg is 195 kg heavier than FWD 3.3 AT at 1680 kg, and 6 hp / 33 Nm stronger.

Which version to choose

If you want the most power and the only 3 generation AWD: 3.8 AT, 3 generation, 166 hp, 308 Nm, Automatic 4, AWD, 1875 kg. That is the catalogue maximum on both power and torque. Cost in the spec is mass (11.30 kg/hp), 92 fuel, and top speed not measured. Versus 2 generation 3.8 AT you gain 1 hp, 19 Nm, and AWD, and you lose FWD’s lower 1718 kg.

If you want AWD without the 3.8-litre: only 2 generation 3.3 AT at 152 hp / 251 Nm / 1748 kg. It is 14 hp and 57 Nm below 3 generation 3.8 AT, and 13 hp below the FWD 3.3 AT in its own generation. Choose it only for drive, not for output.

If you want the best measured kg/hp among FWD sixes: 2 generation 3.3 AT at 165 hp and 1616 kg (9.79 kg/hp). The heavier twin at 1718 kg is the same 165 hp / 263 Nm. 3 generation 3.3 AT trades 5 hp for 12 Nm more (275 Nm) and, on the light row, 1605 kg. Both 3 generation 3.3 AT rows keep top speed 175 km/h (measured); 2 generation 3.3 AT top speed is not measured.

If you want four cylinders and the highest hp/l without a turbo: 3 generation 2.4 AT150 hp, 226 Nm, 61.8 hp/l, 95 fuel, 4 valves per cylinder, Automatic 3, FWD. Pick 1600 kg over 1680 kg. Versus 3 generation 3.0 AT you give up 2 hp and 13 Nm and you gain 543 cc less, 16 valves vs 12, and 95 vs 92. Top speed is the same 175 km/h.

If you want a six without stepping to 3.3: 3 generation 3.0 AT (152 hp, 239 Nm) over 2 generation 3.0 AT (144 hp, 235 Nm): +8 hp, +4 Nm. Prefer 1605 kg over 1669 kg in 3 generation, or 1498 kg over 1575 kg in 2 generation. Gearbox stays Automatic 3.

If you want a manual: only 1 generation. 2.2 MT is the same 94 hp / 165 Nm as 2.2 AT. 2.5 MT at 102 hp matches 2.5 AT at 102 hp. The interesting manual is 2.5 MT Turbo: 152 hp, 244 Nm at 2000 rpm, Manual 5 — same peak as 1 generation 3.3 AT / 3.3 MT (152 hp) with 800 cc less and Turbo. 3.0 MT (143 hp) and 3.3 MT (152 hp) exist if you want a V-shaped six and Manual 5. Kerb weight on all 1 generation rows is not measured, so kg/hp cannot be ranked.

If you want the least power and the lightest 2 generation car: 2.5 AT, 98 hp, 183 Nm, 1498 kg, 15.29 kg/hp. That is 46 hp below 2 generation 3.0 AT at the same 1498 kg.

If you want 16 valves and later clearance: stay in 3 generation (140 mm vs 130 mm). The only 16-valve engine is 2.4 AT.

Reliability in the sense of failure rates is not measured here. What the numbers do show: 3 generation dropped the Turbo 2.5 and all manuals; it added the 16-valve 2.4 AT, raised FWD 3.0 AT from 144 to 152 hp, moved AWD from a detuned 3.3 AT (152 hp) to 3.8 AT (166 hp), and cut FWD 3.3 AT from 165 to 160 hp while adding 12 Nm. 2 generation dropped every manual and the 2.2, added 3.8 AT FWD and AWD 3.3 AT, and raised FWD 3.3 AT to 165 hp. 1 generation is the only place to buy Manual or Turbo.
