MINI Clubman: generations: what actually changed

The catalogue lists four generations of the MINI Clubman. Treat them as two body families, not four lookalikes.

The catalogue lists four generations of the MINI Clubman. Treat them as two body families, not four lookalikes.

2 generation, restyling (from 2019-04-01, still current) is an Estate 5-door with 13 listed modification slots; 12 versions are fully specified here. Tank 48 l. Euro 6 throughout. Ground clearance 140 mm on the 2.0 AT 192 hp Gasoline AWD, 141 mm on the rest.

2 generation (2015-06-01 to 2019-06-30) is the same Estate 5-door family with 24 listed slots and 12 specified versions. Tank 48 l. Euro 6. This is the only generation with 231 hp Gasoline AWD Clubmans, and the only one with the 1.2 AT / 1.2 MT 102 hp 1198 cm³ three-cylinder.

1 generation, restyling (2010-08-01 to 2015-05-31) is a Hatchback 4-door, eight versions, all 1598 cm³ Gasoline Inline 4, FWD, tank 50 l, Euro 5. Clearance 135 mm on the 184 hp and 211 hp cars, 138 mm on the 98 hp and 122 hp cars.

1 generation (2007-12-01 to 2010-08-31) is also a Hatchback 4-door. Tank 40 l — 10 l less than the restyle, 8 l less than the estate. Eco class is Euro 4 only on the 1.4 MT and 1.4 AT 95 hp; it is not measured on the other ten specified versions.

Body is the first buying filter. Estate 5-door = 2 generation or 2 generation, restyling. Hatchback 4-door = either 1 generation. AWD exists only on the estate: Gasoline 192 hp, Diesel 190 hp, and (pre-restyle only) Gasoline 231 hp.

The 231 hp cars are 115.6 hp/l — 19.5 hp/l above the 192 hp 1998 unit. They exist only here; restyling dropped them from the specified list. The 1.2 AT and 1.2 MT are 85.1 hp/l on 1198 cm³ — denser than the later 1.5 102 hp (68.0 hp/l) despite the same 102 hp, because displacement is 301 cm³ smaller.

1 generation, restyling (Hatchback 4-door)

All FWD, 1598 Gasoline, 4 Inline, 4 valves per cylinder, Front, transverse, Direct injection (direct), 95 fuel.

Power per litre: 211 hp → 132.0 hp/l (highest in the whole Clubman file); 184 hp → 115.1; 122 hp → 76.3; 98 hp → 61.3 (lowest Gasoline density).

1 generation (Hatchback 4-door)

The 1.6 MT 109 hp Diesel is the only Clubman here with 260 Nm on 1560 cm³; the matching 1.6 AT 109 hp is 240 Nm. The 1.4 MT/AT 95 hp are the smallest Gasoline engines in the model (1397 cm³, 68.0 hp/l).

Performance and economy (mpg-style litres, 0–100, top speed)

Figures below are as measured in the data. Mixed/city/highway are l/100 km. Where a cell is missing, it is not measured.

Fastest current estate (restyling): 2.0 AT 192 hp Gasoline AWD, 6.9 s, 225 km/h. The 2.0 MT and 2.0 DSG 192 hp FWD are 0.3 s slower (7.2 s) but 3 km/h faster (228 km/h). AWD costs 0.3 s and 3 km/h versus those FWD 192s, and 105 kg versus the 2.0 MT 192 (1465 − 1360).

Fastest Clubman in the file: 2 generation 2.0 MT 231 hp and 2.0 AT 231 hp, both 6.3 s and 238 km/h. That is 0.6 s quicker than the restyle 2.0 AT 192 AWD and 13 km/h more top speed. Mixed consumption: 2.0 AT 231 = 6.8; 2.0 MT 231 = 7.4 — 0.6–1.2 l/100 km more than the restyle 2.0 AT 192 mix of 6.2.

Hatchback peak: 1 generation, restyling 1.6 MT 211 hp, 6.8 s, 238 km/h — 0.5 s slower than the 231 hp estate, same 238 km/h, on 1215 kg (260 kg lighter than the 2.0 AT 231 at 1490 kg). Kg/hp: 1215/211 = 5.76 versus 1490/231 = 6.45. The 1.6 AT 211 is 7.0 s and 236 km/h.

Slowest specified: 1 generation 1.4 AT 95 hp, 13.3 s, 178 km/h. Next: restyle 1.6 AT 98 hp, 12.8 s, 179 km/h. Among current estates: 1.5 DSG 102 hp, 11.6 s, 185 km/h — 0.3 s slower than the 1.5 MT 102 hp (11.3 s) at the same 185 km/h.

Diesel punch versus Gasoline 192: Restyle 2.0 AT 190 Diesel FWD is 7.4 s / 224 km/h with 400 Nm — 0.5 s slower than 2.0 AT 192 AWD, 120 Nm more torque. Mixed 4.4 versus 6.2: 1.8 l/100 km less. CO2 116 versus 141 (25 g/km). The AWD Diesel twin is the same 7.4 s, 222 km/h, mix 4.7, CO2 124, kerb 1605 kg — heaviest restyle Clubman.

Cheapest litres on a current estate: 1.5 DSG 116 hp Diesel, mix 4.2, city 4.6, highway 4.0, CO2 110 — lowest CO2 in restyling. 1.5 MT 116 Diesel: mix 4.3, CO2 112. 2.0 AT 150 Diesel and 2.0 AT 190 Diesel FWD share mix 4.4 and CO2 116.

Restyle Gasoline 192 gearbox tax: 2.0 MT mix 6.6 / city 8.9 / CO2 149; 2.0 AT AWD mix 6.2 / city 6.7 / CO2 141; 2.0 DSG mix 5.7 / city 6.7 / CO2 129. Same 192 hp and 280 Nm: the Robotic 7 FWD uses 0.9 l/100 km less mixed than the Manual 6 FWD and 20 g/km less CO2.

Pre-restyle holes: 2.0 MT 192 AWD, 2.0 AT 192 AWD, and 2.0 AT 190 Diesel AWD have city, highway and mixed not measured. CO2 is measured: 162, 149, 129. Do not assume restyle economy for those three.

1.5 136 hp restyle vs pre-restyle: restyle 1.5 MT 136: 9.2 s, mix 5.7, CO2 131, kerb 1320. Pre-restyle 1.5 MT 136: 9.1 s (−0.1 s), mix 5.3 (−0.4), CO2 123 (−8), kerb 1300 (−20 kg). The older 136 is the more efficient of the two on the given numbers.

Hatchback 98 hp Manual vs Automatic (restyle): 1.6 MT 98: 11.1 s, mix 5.5, CO2 129; 1.6 AT 98: 12.8 s (+1.7 s), mix 6.5 (+1.0), CO2 152. The Automatic costs 1.7 s and 1.0 l/100 km mixed on the same 98 hp / 153 Nm engine.

1 generation Diesel 109: 1.6 MT mix 4.1, city 4.9, highway 3.6 — lowest mix in the whole model — CO2 not measured. 1.6 AT 109: mix 5.1, CO2 136. The Manual saves 1.0 l/100 km mixed.

1 generation 175 Turbo vs restyle 184 Turbo: 1.6 MT 175: 7.6 s, 224 km/h, mix 6.3, tank 40, CO2 not measured. Restyle 1.6 MT 184: 7.5 s, 227 km/h, mix 5.9, tank 50, CO2 137. +9 hp, −0.1 s, +3 km/h, −0.4 mix, +10 l tank.

Dimensions and weight

Estate ground clearance is 141 mm except restyle 2.0 AT 192 AWD at 140 mm. Hatchback restyle: 135 mm (184/211 hp) or 138 mm (98/122 hp). Hatchback original: 138 mm on 98/95/109/143 hp cars, 140 mm on 120/175 hp.

Tank: 48 l estate, 50 l 1 generation, restyling, 40 l 1 generation. Range arithmetic using mixed consumption (tank ÷ mix × 100): restyle 1.5 DSG 116 Diesel 48/4.2×100 ≈ 1143 km; restyle 2.0 AT 192 AWD 48/6.2×100 ≈ 774 km; 2 generation 2.0 MT 231 48/7.4×100 ≈ 649 km; 1 generation 1.6 MT 109 Diesel 40/4.1×100 ≈ 976 km; restyle hatch 1.6 MT 211 50/6.7×100 ≈ 746 km. Versions with mix not measured cannot be ranged.

Kerb span: lightest specified is 1 generation 1.4 MT 95 hp at 1115 kg; heaviest is restyle 2.0 AT 190 Diesel AWD at 1605 kg (delta 490 kg). Gross: 1640 kg (1.4 MT 95 and 1.6 AT 98 original) up to 2085 kg (restyle Diesel 190 AWD). Payload (gross − kerb) on restyle 2.0 AT 192 AWD: 1960 − 1465 = 495 kg; on restyle 1.5 MT 102: 1865 − 1320 = 545 kg; on original 1.4 MT 95: 1640 − 1115 = 525 kg.

Wheel sizes: not measured on all listed Clubman versions.

Chassis labels that do not change the buying choice: Independent, spring front and rear; Ventilated disc front; Disc rear — across the specified versions.

Which version to choose

Buy a current estate if you need five doors and 48 l. Then split by job.

1. Daily Gasoline, lowest mixed litres among 192 hp: 2 generation, restyling 2.0 DSG 192 hp, Robotic 7, FWD, 5.7 mixed, 129 CO2, 7.2 s, 228 km/h, 1395 kg. Versus 2.0 MT 192: −0.9 mixed, −20 CO2, +35 kg, same 7.2 s. Versus 2.0 AT 192 AWD: −0.5 mixed, −12 CO2, −70 kg, +0.3 s, no AWD.

2. AWD Gasoline on the current car: only 2.0 AT 192 hp Automatic 8. 6.9 s is the restyle’s best sprint. You pay 105 kg versus 2.0 MT 192 FWD and 1 mm less clearance (140 vs 141).

3. Long-distance Diesel, current: 2.0 AT 190 hp FWD if you want 400 Nm and 7.4 s at 4.4 mixed / 116 CO2. Choose 1.5 DSG 116 hp if the target is 4.2 mixed / 110 CO2 and you accept 10.8 s / 192 km/h. The 190 AWD Diesel is the same 7.4 s as FWD 190, 2 km/h slower (222 vs 224), +0.3 mixed, +8 CO2, +125 kg — AWD is the only numerical reason to take it.

4. Manual Gasoline, current, not 192: 1.5 MT 136 hp, 9.2 s, 205 km/h, 5.7 mixed, 1320 kg. It is 34 hp and 2.1 s quicker than 1.5 MT 102 hp at the same 1320 kg; mix is 0.1 better (5.7 vs 5.8). The 102 hp Manual is 11.3 s — only if 68.0 hp/l and 190 Nm are enough.

5. 150 hp Diesel, current: 2.0 AT 150 (8.5 s, 212 km/h, mix 4.4, 1360 kg) versus 2.0 MT 150 (8.6 s, same 212, mix 4.4, 1320 kg). Automatic is 0.1 s quicker and 40 kg heavier; mixed litres match. Versus 2.0 AT 190 FWD: 40 hp and 70 Nm less, +1.1 s, same 4.4 mix, −120 kg. The 190 buys time, not fuel.

Buy the pre-restyle estate only for engines the restyle list does not carry: 2.0 MT 231 hp or 2.0 AT 231 hp (6.3 s, 238 km/h, 115.6 hp/l), or the 1.2 MT / 1.2 AT 102 hp 1198 cm³. Pre-restyle 1.5 MT 136 also beats restyle 1.5 MT 136 on mix (−0.4) and mass (−20 kg). Do not pick pre-restyle 2.0 MT 192 AWD or 2.0 AT 192 AWD for economy: mixed is not measured.

Buy a Hatchback 4-door only if that body is the point. Then:

What extra hardware buys, in arithmetic only. AWD on restyle Gasoline 192: +105 kg vs MT FWD, −0.3 s vs MT, −3 km/h. AWD on restyle Diesel 190: +125 kg, 0.0 s, −2 km/h, +0.3 mixed. Robotic vs Manual on restyle 192 Gasoline: −0.9 mixed, 0.0 s. Automatic vs Manual on restyle hatch 98 hp: +1.7 s, +1.0 mixed. 231 vs 192 on 2 generation Gasoline AWD Automatic: +39 hp, +70 Nm, −0.6 s, +13 km/h, mix 6.8 vs not measured on the 192 AT AWD. 211 hatch vs 184 hatch Manual: +27 hp, +20 Nm, −0.7 s, +11 km/h, +0.8 mixed, +10 kg.

Problems and reliability are not in the data — not measured. Prices are not in the data. Choose on body (Estate 5-door vs Hatchback 4-door), drive (FWD vs AWD), fuel (Gasoline vs Diesel), and the named version’s hp, seconds, litres, kilograms, and tank as tabulated above.
