Jeep CJ: which version to buy and why

Power per litre: what the extra displacement buys
Specific output (hp per litre of displacement) is the cleanest arithmetic on this table, because weight is not measured.

The 106 hp 2.5 MT is 18 / 88 ≈ 20% more power on the same 2500 cc, and it is the only four-cylinder with a measured top speed (135). The 88 hp 2.5 MT is one of only two 3-speed manuals in the whole range (the other is 3.7 MT). If the name on a listing is only “2.5 MT”, check horsepower: 88 versus 106 is the fork.
Gasoline four-cylinders: 2.0 MT vs both 2.5 MT
2.0 MT (85 hp, 2000 cc, 4 gears) versus weaker 2.5 MT (88 hp, 2500 cc, 3 gears): +3 hp for +500 cc, and you lose a gear (4 → 3). Specific output drops from 42.5 to 35.2 hp/L. The 88 hp 2.5 MT is a poor trade against 2.0 MT on these numbers.
2.0 MT versus stronger 2.5 MT (106 hp, 4 gears): +21 hp (25% more than 85), same 4-speed Manual, same AWD, same No boost. Displacement up 500 cc. This is the four-cylinder step that actually moves power.
Among Gasoline fours, 2.5 MT (106 hp) is the one to prefer unless you specifically want the smallest engine (2.0 MT, 85 hp, still 42.5 hp/L).
Gasoline six-cylinders: 3.7 MT vs 3.8 MT vs 4.2 MT

3.7 MT versus 3.8 MT: 50 hp more (150 − 100) from 100 cc less displacement, but 3 gears instead of 4, and V-shaped instead of Inline. That is the largest power gap between any two neighbouring displacements.
3.8 MT versus 4.2 MT: +3 hp, +400 cc, same Inline 6, same 4-speed Manual. Specific output falls (26.3 → 24.5 hp/L). 4.2 MT does not earn its extra 400 cc on power.
If the goal is maximum hp, 3.7 MT is the only six that matters (150 hp). If the goal is a 4-speed Inline six, 3.8 MT (100 hp) and 4.2 MT (103 hp) are nearly the same car on output; 3.8 MT is the denser of the two.

If you want the strongest four-cylinder with a 4-speed: 2.5 MT at 106 hp / 78 kW — not the 88 hp 2.5 MT. Same 2500 cc, +18 hp, +1 gear, top speed 135 (the highest measured figure in the data).
If you want the smallest Gasoline engine and the best hp/L: 2.0 MT — 85 hp, 2000 cc, 42.5 hp/L, Manual 4. Close specific output to the 106 hp 2.5 MT, 21 hp less.
If you want a 4-speed Inline six and do not need 150 hp: 3.8 MT (100 hp, 3800 cc) over 4.2 MT (103 hp, 4200 cc). The extra 400 cc on 4.2 MT returns 3 hp.
