Generations compared (what actually changed)
Honda lists six generations. They are not six equal steps.
Honda lists six generations. They are not six equal steps.
| Generation | Years | Body | Versions | Power range | Drive options | Tank | Clearance |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 generation | 1998–2001 | SUV 3-doors | 12 listed (15 declared) | 105–124 hp | FWD and AWD | 55 L | 170 or 190 mm |
| 1 generation, restyling | 2001–2006 | SUV 3-doors | 12 listed (16 declared) | 105–124 hp | FWD and AWD | 55 L | 170 or 190 mm |
| 2 generation | 2015–2018 | SUV 5-doors | 6 | 120–141 hp | FWD; AWD only on one 1.8 CVT | 50 L | 185 mm |
| 2 generation, restyling | 2018–2021 | SUV 5-doors | 6 | 120–182 hp | FWD; AWD only on one 1.8 CVT | 50 L | 185 mm |
| 3 generation | 2021–2024 | SUV 5-doors | 3 | 131–141 hp | FWD; AWD as 1.8 i 4WD CVT | 50 L petrol, 40 L Hybrid | 185 mm petrol, 188 mm Hybrid |
| 3 generation, restyling | 2024–present | SUV 5-doors | 1 | 131 hp | FWD only | 40 L | 188 mm |
The jump from 1 generation to 2 generation is the biggest structural change in the data: SUV 3-doors → SUV 5-doors, tank 55 → 50 L, clearance 190 mm (or 170 mm on the dependent-spring variants) → 185 mm, and Diesel appears for the first time as 1.6 MT. 2 generation, restyling is the only generation with 182 hp. 3 generation is the only generation with Hybrid. 3 generation, restyling drops the two 1.8 petrol versions and keeps only 1.5 i-MMD e:HEV e-CVT.
Engines and specs (every named version)

Performance and economy (arithmetic that decides the buy)
0–100 km/h. Fastest measured: 1.5 MT 182 hp at 7.8 s. Next: 1.5 CVT 182 hp at 8.6 s. Then a cluster: 1.6 MT Diesel 2 generation 10.1 s, Hybrid 10.1 s, 1.5 MT 130 hp 10.2 s, 1.8 MT 141 hp 10.2 s. Slowest measured five-door: 1.8 CVT AWD 2 generation at 11.6 s. Slowest measured three-door: 1.6 MT / 1.6 CVT 105 hp AWD at 12.7 s. Several first-generation 124 hp FWD rows are not measured.
Top speed. Highest measured: 1.5 MT 182 hp at 215 km/h; 1.5 CVT 182 hp at 200. 1.5 MT 130 hp and 1.6 MT Diesel (2 generation) share 192. Hybrid is 171. First-generation 124 hp AWD is 170; 105 hp FWD 165; 105 hp AWD 162. 1.8 MT and both 1.8 CVT of 2 generation: not measured. 1.8 i CVT and 1.8 i 4WD CVT: not measured.
Fuel. Lowest mixed: 1.6 MT Diesel 4.0 L/100 km (both 2 generation and restyling). Hybrid mixed 4.2, but city 3.1 is the lowest city figure in the catalogue — and unlike the Diesels, Hybrid highway 4.8 is higher than city. Cheapest five-door petrol mixed: 1.5 CVT 130 hp at 5.2 (2 generation) or 5.3 (restyling). 1.5 MT 130 hp mixed 5.6 uses 0.4 L/100 km more than its CVT twin but is 1.2 s quicker (10.2 vs 11.4). 1.8 petrol mixed sits at 7.6–8.4 (2 generation) and 7.8–8.1 (restyling / 3 generation). First-generation mixed is measured only on the 1317 kg 1.6 CVT / 1.6 MT 124 hp AWD pair: 8.6 — 0.5 L/100 km worse than the thirstiest 2 generation 1.8 MT.
CO2. Lowest measured: Hybrid 96 g/km. Diesel 104–105. 1.5 CVT 130 hp 120–121. 1.5 MT 130 hp 130. 1.5 CVT 182 hp 137. Most 1.8 rows and all first-generation rows: not measured.
Power per litre (hp ÷ displacement in litres). 1.5 182 hp: 121.5 hp/L. Hybrid 131 / 1.498 = 87.4. 1.5 130 hp: 86.8. 1.8 141 hp: 78.4. First-generation 124 hp / 1.590 = 78.0. Diesel 120 / 1.597 = 75.1. First-generation 105 hp / 1.590 = 66.0. The restyling 182 hp engine is not a small step up from the 130 hp 1.5; it is 52 hp more from the same 1498 cc.
Weight per horsepower (kerb ÷ hp). Best measured: 1.5 MT / 1.5 CVT 182 hp at 1450/182 = 8.0 kg/hp. 1.8 MT 2 generation: 1310/141 = 9.3. 1.5 MT 130 hp: 1241/130 = 9.5. 1.5 CVT 130 hp: 9.6. 1.8 CVT AWD 2 generation: 1389/141 = 9.9. Hybrid: 1380/131 = 10.5. First-generation 124 hp at 1260 kg: 10.2. Diesel 2 generation: 1324/120 = 11.0. Lightest first-generation 105 hp at 1160 kg: 11.0. The 182 hp cars are the heaviest petrol HR-Vs (1450 kg) but still the strongest on kg/hp.
Dimensions and weight
Kerb. Lightest measured: 1160 kg (1.6 MT / 1.6 CVT 105 hp AWD, 1 generation and restyling). Heaviest petrol: 1450 kg (182 hp pair). Heaviest overall with a gross figure: Hybrid 1380 kg kerb, 1870 kg gross — 40 kg above the 1830 kg gross used on most 2 generation restyling petrol/Diesel rows. Several 170 mm-clearance first-generation FWD 124 hp rows have kerb not measured.
Gross. Measured on first generation mostly as 1530–1640 kg; on 2 generation restyling as 1830 kg; on Hybrid as 1870 kg. Entire 2 generation (2015–2018): gross not measured.
Clearance. 190 mm on the independent-spring first-generation majority; 170 mm on the Dependent, spring 124 hp FWD rows; 185 mm on 2 generation through 3 generation petrol; 188 mm on Hybrid.
Tank. 55 L first generation; 50 L from 2 generation petrol/Diesel; 40 L Hybrid. Mixed range from the figures: Diesel 50/4.0 × 100 = 1250 km; 1.5 CVT 130 hp 50/5.2 × 100 ≈ 962 km; Hybrid 40/4.2 × 100 ≈ 952 km; 1.8 MT 50/8.4 × 100 ≈ 595 km; first-generation 124 hp AWD 55/8.6 × 100 ≈ 640 km.
Wheels. First generation (where listed): 195/70 R15 and 205/60 R16. 2 generation 1.5 MT / 1.6 MT: 215/60 R16 and 215/55 R17. 2 generation 1.5 CVT and all listed restyling sizes: 215/60 R16 and 225/50 R18. 3 generation wheels: not measured. 2 generation 1.8 wheels: not measured.
Chassis notes that affect a used buy. First generation Independent, spring front and (on most rows) rear, Drum rear brakes. 2 generation and restyling: Independent, spring front, Semi-independent, springorts hélicoïdaux, sem rear, Ventilated disc front, Disc rear. Hybrid rear is Independent, spring — the only five-door with that rear label.
Which version to choose
Buy the Diesel if mixed litres are the metric. 1.6 MT 120 hp, 2 generation: 4.0 mixed, 10.1 s, 192 km/h, 300 Nm at 2000 rpm (the torque peak is 2600 rpm lower than the 155 Nm of 1.5 MT 130 hp). The restyling 1.6 MT is the same mixed 4.0 but 0.4 s slower (10.5), 4 km/h slower (188), 19 kg heavier (1343 vs 1324), and 1 g/km more CO2 (105 vs 104). Highway 3.9 vs 3.8. The extra restyling mass does not buy acceleration.
Buy 182 hp only if 0–100 is the metric. 1.5 MT 182 hp versus 1.5 CVT 130 hp in the same restyling: 7.8 vs 11.2 s (−3.4 s), 215 vs 187 km/h (+28), 220 vs 158 Nm, 1450 vs 1251 kg (+199 kg), mixed 5.9 vs 5.3 (+0.6 L/100 km), CO2 135 vs 121. Versus the 182 hp 1.5 CVT: the Manual is 0.8 s quicker (7.8 vs 8.6), 15 km/h faster (215 vs 200), 0.1 L/100 km better mixed (5.9 vs 6.0), 2 g/km less CO2. Same 1450 kg. The Manual is the better 182 hp car on every measured number except that it is still a Manual 6.
Do not buy 2 generation 1.8 petrol for economy or for speed. 1.8 MT matches 1.5 MT 130 hp at 10.2 s but uses 8.4 vs 5.6 mixed (+2.8 L/100 km) and weighs 69 kg more (1310 vs 1241). Specific output is 78.4 vs 86.8 hp/L. Top speed, CO2, eco class, wheels: not measured on 1.8 MT. The FWD 1.8 CVT is 0.4 s slower than the Manual (10.6 vs 10.2) but 0.8 L/100 km better mixed (7.6 vs 8.4). That is the only measured argument for Variable on the 1.8.
AWD tax, five-door. 2 generation 1.8 CVT AWD vs FWD: +1.0 s (11.6 vs 10.6), +73 kg (1389 vs 1316), +0.5 mixed (8.1 vs 7.6), +0.7 highway (7.4 vs 6.7). Restyling: +0.9 s (11.5 vs 10.6), +72 kg (1392 vs 1320), +0.3 mixed (8.1 vs 7.8), top speed 192 vs 195. 3 generation 1.8 i 4WD CVT vs 1.8 i CVT: +73 kg (1391 vs 1318), mixed 8.1 vs 7.8, 0–100 not measured on both. AWD never appears on a 1.5 or on the Diesel or on the Hybrid in this data.
AWD tax, three-door. On 105 hp: FWD 11.2 s / 165 km/h versus AWD 12.0 s / 162 km/h at 1160 kg, or FWD 11.7 s versus AWD 12.7 s at 1257 kg — 0.8–1.0 s and 3 km/h. On 124 hp the 10.8 s AWD pair at 1260 kg is the fastest first-generation measured time; the 1317 kg AWD pair is 11.3 s with the only consumption data (8.6 mixed). FWD 124 hp 0–100 is not measured.
105 vs 124 hp in 1 generation. Same 1590 cc. 124 hp is 19 hp and 9 Nm more (144 vs 135), peak torque 1400 rpm later (4900 vs 3500). Fastest 124 hp AWD 10.8 s versus fastest 105 hp FWD 11.2 s (−0.4 s) and versus 105 hp AWD 12.0 s (−1.2 s). Specific output 78.0 vs 66.0 hp/L. If the three-door must have AWD, 124 hp pays back in seconds; if it is FWD, the 105 hp 1.6 MT / 1.6 CVT at 1180 kg and 11.2 s is fully measured and 80 kg lighter than the 1260 kg 124 hp AWD.
1.5 MT vs 1.5 CVT at 130 hp (2 generation). Manual: 10.2 s, 192 km/h, mixed 5.6, 1241 kg, 130 g/km, 215/55 R17 second size. Variable: 11.4 s (+1.2), 187 km/h (−5), mixed 5.2 (−0.4), 1249 kg, 120 g/km, 225/50 R18 second size. Buy Manual for seconds; Variable for litres and CO2.
After 2021. 1.8 i CVT is a 141 hp FWD with mixed 7.8 — 0.2 worse than 2 generation FWD 1.8 CVT mixed 7.6, 2 kg heavier (1318 vs 1316), CO2 now measured at 122 g/km, 0–100 not measured. It does not beat the older 130 hp 1.5 CVT on litres (5.2–5.3) or on kerb (1249–1251). The Hybrid undercuts both on city (3.1 vs 6.1) and mixed (4.2 vs 5.2), matches Diesel 0–100 at 10.1 s, but is 19 km/h slower than Diesel 2 generation (171 vs 192), has a 40 L tank versus 50 L, and 188 mm clearance versus 185. 3 generation, restyling is that Hybrid with no petrol alternative in the catalogue — if you need AWD or Manual after 2024, this generation does not list one.
Short map. Lowest litres, five-door: 1.6 MT Diesel. Lowest city litres: 1.5 i-MMD e:HEV e-CVT. Lowest 0–100 and highest top speed: 1.5 MT 182 hp. Lightest five-door petrol: 1.5 MT 130 hp at 1241 kg. Lightest Honda HR-V in the file: 1.6 MT / 1.6 CVT 105 hp AWD at 1160 kg. Only three-door: 1 generation and 1 generation, restyling. Only 182 hp: 2 generation, restyling. Only Hybrid: 3 generation and 3 generation, restyling. Where a cell is empty in the source, it is not measured — not an implied zero.
