Generations — which era to shop

Treat the name “City” as three product eras, not nine copies of one car.

Treat the name “City” as three product eras, not nine copies of one car.

1 generation (1981-10-01–1986-09-30) and 2 generation (1986-10-01–1994-03-31) are Mini 3-doors. Kerb weight where measured is 720–780 kg305 kg lighter than the lightest later 1.5 Sedan with a published weight (6 generation `1.5 MT` / `1.5 DCT` at 1085 kg). Ground clearance is 145 mm (1 generation) or 160 mm (2 generation). Tank is not measured in 1 generation and 40 l in 2 generation.

3 generation (1996-04-01–2002-10-31) through 7 generation (from 2020-11-01, stop not measured) are Sedan. Tank is 45 l only in 3 generation, 42 l from 4 generation through 6 generation, restyling, and 40 l in 7 generation — 5 l smaller than 3 generation.

Within the Sedan era, chassis detail changes the used-car job:

If you want Disc at both ends, 4 generation is the only Sedan generation in this data with rear Disc. If you want 170 mm clearance on a Sedan, look at 3 generation, selected 5 generation 1.3/1.5 rows at 170 mm, and all six 5 generation, restyling versions at 170 mm.

Performance and mpg — what the numbers actually compare

Fastest measured 0–100 km/h: 9.8 s, shared by 5 generation `1.5 MT` 120 hp; 6 generation `1.5 MT`, `1.5 CVT`, `1.5 DCT`; 6 generation, restyling `1.5 MT` and `1.5 CVT`. That is 3.6 s quicker than the slowest measured sprint: 4 generation `1.3 MT` 83 hp at 13.4 s.

Automatic tax on 5 generation: `1.3 AT` 100 hp is 1.2 s slower than `1.3 MT` 100 hp (12.5 vs 11.3) and 30 kg heavier (1130 vs 1100). `1.5 AT` 120 hp is 0.4 s slower than `1.5 MT` 120 hp (10.2 vs 9.8) and 55 kg heavier (1140 vs 1085).

On 6 generation the gearbox does not change the published 0–100: Manual, Variable and Robotic all 9.8 s. CVT vs MT weight difference is 5 kg (1090 vs 1085). Restyling equalises weight at 1085 kg for both `1.5 MT` and `1.5 CVT`.

Top speed is sparsely measured. Peak listed: 175 km/h on 4 generation `1.3 MT` 83 hp; 5 generation `1.5 MT` 118 hp; and the 110 hp / 118 hp 1.5 rows of 5 generation, restyling. 171 km/h on several 94 hp 1.3 manuals/CVTs. 150 km/h on both 2 generation `1.2` cars. Everything else: not measured.

Fuel use is published on few rows, all Gasoline, all 6.6 combined except one older 1.5:

So the restyle 1.5 at 110 hp and 118 hp share the same measured consumption and the same 11 s 0–100. The extra 8 hp does not show up in those two columns. Diesel consumption: not measured.

Dimensions and weight — kg per horsepower

Kerb range with a number: 720 kg (2 generation `1.2 MT`/`1.2 AT`) to 1140 kg (5 generation `1.5 AT` 120 hp) — 420 kg.

kg/hp (kerb ÷ hp), where both exist:

hp per litre (hp ÷ litres from cc):

Gross weight is measured only on 5 generation `1.5 MT` 118 hp and the 1.5 restyle cars that share 1485 kg. Payload there: 1485 − 1032 = 453 kg (pre-restyle 118 hp MT) or 1485 − 1090 = 395 kg (restyle).

Which version to choose

Daily modern Sedan, measured sprint, Gasoline. Pick 6 generation or 6 generation, restyling `1.5 MT` 120 hp: 9.8 s, 145 Nm, 1085 kg, Euro 5 or Euro 6. Restyling is the same 0–100 and weight as 6 generation MT; the labelled gain is eco class Euro 6 vs Euro 5. Clearance is 160 mm on 6 generation and not measured after restyling.

Same sprint without a clutch. 6 generation `1.5 CVT` 120 hp: still 9.8 s, 5 kg more than that generation’s MT. 6 generation, restyling `1.5 CVT` matches MT weight at 1085 kg and still 9.8 s.

Torque and Diesel. Only 6 generation `1.5 DCT`: 100 hp, 200 Nm, Robotic 7, 9.8 s, 1085 kg. You give up 20 hp versus the Gasoline 120 hp 1.5 and gain 55 Nm. Consumption not measured, so economy is not a proven reason in this catalogue — torque is.

Newest nameplate. 7 generation `1.5 CVT` 121 hp is +1 hp versus 6 generation 120 hp and −2 l tank (40 vs 42). Almost every other buying metric is not measured. Do not assume it is quicker; this file does not say it is.

Best documented 1.5 of 5 generation. Prefer `1.5 MT` 120 hp (9.8 s, 1085 kg) over `1.5 MT` 118 hp (11 s, 1032 kg) if sprint matters: 1.2 s and 2 hp for 53 kg. Prefer the 118 hp MT if you need 92 fuel, 170 mm clearance, published mpg 6.6, and the only pre-restyle gross weight (1485 kg). `1.5 AT` 120 hp is the heaviest 5 generation car (1140 kg) and 0.4 s slower than its MT twin.

Do not confuse the two 5 generation `1.3 MT` rows. 100 hp / 1339 cc / 11.3 s / 160 mm vs 94 hp / 1343 cc / 0–100 not measured / top 171 / 170 mm. Same badge, 6 hp and 10 mm clearance apart.

5 generation, restyling. All 1.5s share 11 s, 175 km/h, 6.6 combined, 1090 kg, 170 mm. Choosing 118 hp over 110 hp does not change those figures here. `1.3 MT`/`1.3 CVT` 94 hp drop to 171 km/h and lose the consumption figures (not measured). CVT vs MT on restyle 1.5: identical 0–100, top speed, mpg and weight in this data — the extra hardware is the Variable unit, not a measured performance delta.

4 generation — only if you want rear Disc and Independent, spring at the back. Then take `1.5 MT` 110 hp or `1.5 CVT` 110 hp (4 valves), not the 88 hp 2-valve 1.5 (−22 hp, −12 Nm). `1.3 MT` 83 hp is the slowest timed City (13.4 s) and 12.4 kg/hp. Clearance 150 mm is 20 mm below 5 generation restyle.

3 generation — lightest Sedan. `1.3 MT` 94 hp at 940 kg matches that generation’s `1.5 MT` 115 hp 0–100 (11.3 s) while the 115 hp car is 68 kg heavier and the only 3 generation row with mpg (6.8 combined, 0.2 worse than later 1.5 figures of 6.6). Tank 45 l is the largest in the model.

2 generation Mini 3-doors — lightest cars. `1.3 MT` 100 hp at 750 kg is 7.5 kg/hp. `1.2 MT` 76 hp is the lightest absolute mass (720 kg) with a measured top speed (150 km/h). Fuel 92 on the 1.3s, 95 on the 1.2s.

1 generation — only Turbo City. `1.2 MT` 110 hp Turbo and `1.2 AT` 110 hp Turbo: 160 Nm from 1231 cc, 89.4 hp/l. The 44 hp `1.2 MT` is the weakest City listed. Weights, 0–100, top speed, tank: not measured — you are buying the Turbo/44 hp split, not a verified sprint.

What “extra” does not buy in this file. There are no prices. On restyle 5 generation 1.5, extra horsepower does not buy a faster 0–100 or lower l/100 km. On 6 generation, Automatic-style units (Variable, Robotic) do not buy a slower 0–100 than Manual. On 7 generation, the extra 1 hp does not come with a measured sprint, weight or clearance.

Short map: measured speed → 6 generation / 6 generation, restyling 1.5 at 9.8 s; Diesel torque → `1.5 DCT`; rear discs → 4 generation 110 hp 1.5; 170 mm Sedan + published mpg → 5 generation, restyling 1.5; lightest Sedan → 3 generation `1.3 MT`; Turbo curiosity → 1 generation 110 hp; current showroom name → 7 generation `1.5 CVT` with most fields not measured.
