Generations: what actually changed

1 generation (2003–2016) is the whole model: Mini 5-doors, 10 versions. No second generation exists in the data, so “which generation” is not a fork. Restyling is not listed as a separate generation. What you are choosing is petrol versus diesel, Manual versus Robotic, and which of two same-named 1.4 MT and two same-named 1.3 MT / 1.3 DSG power ratings.

Engine: petrol trio versus diesel quartet

Petrol (Gasoline, boost No, multi-point injection where measured).

The 1.2 MT (80 hp, 114 Nm, 1242 cc, 4 valves, compression 10.6, bore/stroke 70.8 × 78.86, 95 octane) is the smallest petrol. Specific output is 80 / 1.242 ≈ 64.4 hp/L. Peak torque arrives at 4000 rpm — later than every diesel here.

The two 1.4 MT cars share 1368 cc and 72 × 84 bore/stroke but are not the same engine spec. The 77 hp 1.4 MT has 2 valves per cylinder, compression 11, peak at 6000 rpm, 115 Nm at 3000 rpm, fuel grade not measured. Specific output is 77 / 1.368 ≈ 56.3 hp/L — the weakest petrol per litre. The 95 hp 1.4 MT has 4 valves, compression 11.2, 128 Nm at 4500 rpm, 95 octane. Specific output is 95 / 1.368 ≈ 69.4 hp/L. Same displacement, +18 hp (+23%) and +13 Nm. The 1.4 DSG is the same 95 hp / 128 Nm / 1368 cc engine with a Robotic 5-speed instead of Manual 5.

Diesel (Turbo).

The two 1.3 displacements are close but not identical: 1248 cc for 90 hp and 1251 cc for 70 hp. Both are 4 Inline, 4 valves, Turbo, peak power at 4000 rpm, peak torque at 1750 rpm. The 90 hp 1.3 MT has 200 Nm, compression 17.6, 69.6 × 82, Diesel fuel, and the only 6-speed Manual in the catalogue. Specific output 90 / 1.248 ≈ 72.1 hp/L. The 70 hp 1.3 MT has 180 Nm, compression 18, same 69.6 × 82, 70 / 1.251 ≈ 56.0 hp/L. Difference: +20 hp and +20 Nm for the 90 hp pair, −3 cc on paper, one extra gear on the 1.3 MT 90 hp.

The 1.3 DSG 90 hp and 1.3 DSG 70 hp match their Manual twins on engine numbers but use Robotic 5 instead of Manual 6 (90 hp) or Manual 5 (70 hp).

The 1.6 MT is the power and torque peak of the model: 120 hp at 3750 rpm, 320 Nm at 1750 rpm, 1598 cc, 4 valves, Turbo. Compression and bore/stroke are not measured. Specific output 120 / 1.598 ≈ 75.1 hp/L — highest in the table. Torque per litre 320 / 1.598 ≈ 200.3 Nm/L.

Fastest measured 0–100 is the 1.6 MT at 9.9 s (1.6 s quicker than the 1.4 MT 95 hp and 1.9 MT at 11.5 s). Slowest is the 1.3 MT 70 hp / 1.3 DSG 70 hp at 15.4 s5.5 s behind the 1.6 MT. Highest top speed is 190 on the 1.6 MT; lowest is 159 on the 70 hp 1.3 pair.

Among petrols, the 1.4 MT 77 hp and 1.2 MT share 13.5 s and 163; the extra 126 cc on the 77 hp 1.4 MT does not buy a quicker 0–100. The 95 hp 1.4 MT cuts 2.0 s and adds 12 km/h versus both of those.

Lightest measured kerb is the 1.2 MT at 1150 kg. Heaviest is the 1.9 MT at 1275 kg (+125 kg versus 1.2 MT, +70 kg versus 1.3 MT 90 hp). Best measured mass-to-power is the 1.4 MT 95 hp at 12.16 kg/hp; worst is the 1.3 MT 70 hp at 17.14 kg/hp. Gross is measured only on 1.4 MT 77 hp (1655) and 1.3 MT 90 hp (1700). Payload on those two: 1655 − 1155 = 500 kg and 1700 − 1205 = 495 kg.

Which version to choose

If you want the strongest Idea in the catalogue: 1.6 MT. It is the only version with 120 hp and 320 Nm, the only 9.9 s 0–100, and the only 190 top speed. Versus the 1.9 MT you give up 312 cc but gain +19 hp and +120 Nm, 1.6 s on 0–100, and +11 km/h. Versus the 1.3 MT 90 hp you gain +30 hp and +120 Nm and 2.3 s. Consumption and kerb for 1.6 MT are not measured, so you cannot score it on economy or kg/hp from this dataset.

If you want the best measured diesel economy and the only 6-speed: 1.3 MT 90 hp. Mixed 4.9, highway 4.1, 200 Nm at 1750 rpm, 12.2 s, 173, kerb 1205, gross 1700. Versus 1.3 MT 70 hp: +20 hp, +20 Nm, −3.2 s, +14 km/h, mixed −0.2, highway −0.4, city identical 6.2, kerb +5 kg. The 70 hp 1.3 MT is the slowest Idea (15.4 s, 159) and the worst kg/hp (17.14). There is no measured reason to pick 70 hp over 90 hp except a lower peak output if that is the goal.

If you want petrol and the best mass-to-power: 1.4 MT 95 hp. Same 1368 cc as the 77 hp 1.4 MT, but 4 valves versus 2, 95 versus 77 hp, 128 versus 115 Nm, 11.5 s / 175 versus 13.5 s / 163, mixed 6.6 versus 6.2. You pay +0.4 mixed and +0.6 city for +18 hp. Versus 1.2 MT: +15 hp, +14 Nm, +126 cc, same 13.5 s is not what the 77 hp 1.4 buys — the 95 hp 1.4 is the one that actually improves 0–100 (−2.0 s) and top speed (+12). Fuel 95 on 1.2 MT and 1.4 MT 95 hp; not measured on 1.4 MT 77 hp.

If you want the cheapest-running petrol on the sheet: 1.4 MT 77 hp. Mixed 6.2, city 7.9, highway 5.2 — all three better than 1.2 MT (6.5 / 8.4 / 5.4) despite +5 kg kerb. It is the only petrol with a measured gross (1655). It is also the least powerful petrol (77 hp) and ties the 1.2 MT for slowest petrol 0–100. Choose it for litres, not seconds.

1.2 MT makes sense only if you want the lightest kerb (1150) and the smallest petrol (1242 cc, 80 hp). It is 3 hp stronger than the 77 hp 1.4 MT but 0.3 worse on mixed and identical on 0–100/top speed. Power per litre (64.4) beats the 77 hp 1.4 (56.3) and loses to the 95 hp 1.4 (69.4).

1.9 MT if you want the largest diesel (1910 cc), 2 valves, torque from 1500 rpm, 101 hp, 11.5 s, 179, mixed 5.5. Versus 1.3 MT 90 hp you get +11 hp, the same 200 Nm (but 250 rpm earlier), +0.6 mixed, +70 kg, −0.7 s, +6 km/h, and you lose the 6-speed. Versus 1.6 MT you lose on every measured performance number. Pick 1.9 MT for cubic centimetres and early torque, not for specific output (52.9 hp/L).

Manual versus Robotic. 1.4 DSG matches 1.4 MT 95 hp on 95 hp, 128 Nm, 11.5 s, 175. 1.3 DSG 90 hp matches 1.3 MT 90 hp on engine and 12.2 s / 173, but drops from 6 gears to 5. 1.3 DSG 70 hp matches 1.3 MT 70 hp on 15.4 s / 159. All three DSG cars have not measured fuel use and not measured kerb. If you need those numbers, the Manual twins are the ones that have them. The Robotic box does not change the stated 0–100 or top speed in this dataset.

Problems / reliability. This catalogue does not list failure rates, recalls, or service intervals. What it does show: Robotic versions lack measured consumption and mass; 1.6 MT lacks measured consumption, mass, compression, and bore/stroke; several petrol/diesel versions lack gross weight. Treat those gaps as not measured, not as “does not apply”.

Short decision tree (one generation only). Want maximum hp/Nm/speed → 1.6 MT. Want measured diesel economy and a 6-speed → 1.3 MT 90 hp. Want petrol punch and best kg/hp → 1.4 MT 95 hp. Want lowest measured petrol mixed → 1.4 MT 77 hp. Want lightest petrol → 1.2 MT. Want largest diesel and earliest torque peak → 1.9 MT. Want two pedals with the same claimed 0–100 as a given engine → 1.4 DSG, 1.3 DSG 90 hp, or 1.3 DSG 70 hp, knowing economy and weight are not measured. Avoid 1.3 MT 70 hp / 1.3 DSG 70 hp unless you specifically want the lowest diesel power: they are the slowest Idea and, where weighed, the heaviest per horsepower.
