Engine position is Front, transverse where measured; on 2.0 AT 109 hp, 2.2 MT 130 hp and 3.0 AT 208 hp it is not measured. Injection on Gasoline rows is Distributed injection (multi-point); Diesel injection is not measured. Bore × stroke 85 × 88 on the 1997 Diesel/Gasoline fours that list it; 85 × 96 on 2179 Diesel; 88 × 96 on 2.2 MT 158 hp Gasoline; 87 × 82.6 on 3.0 AT 204 hp and 208 hp. Compression is not measured on all.

Valves per cylinder: 4. Fuel labels: Diesel uses Diesel; Gasoline uses 95.

Performance and economy (mpg in l/100 km)

Sprint, top speed and consumption decide which extra horsepower is worth carrying.

Restyling Diesels vs each other. 2.0 MT 122 hp: 12.9 s, 180 km/h, city/highway/mixed 8.8 / 5.8 / 6.9. Step to 2.0 MT 138 hp: +16 hp, +20 Nm, −1.5 s to 100 (11.4 s), +10 km/h (190), mixed 7.10.2 worse than 122 hp, not better. Step to 2.0 MT 160 hp: +38 hp vs 122, +40 Nm, 11.2 s, 203 km/h, mixed 5.91.0 l/100 km less than 122 hp and 1.2 less than 138 hp. That is the only restyle Diesel that is both stronger and more economical on mixed.

Automatic vs Manual at 160 hp. 2.0 AT 160 hp: 11.1 s (0.1 s quicker than the Manual) but mixed 7.2 vs 5.9 (+1.3 l/100 km). Top speed: not measured. You buy the Automatic 6 for shifting, not for economy or a listed vmax.

2.2 vs 2.0 at the top of the Diesel range. 2.2 MT 173 hp: 10.0 s (fastest measured C8), 200 km/h, mixed 7.2, 370 Nm from 1500 rpm. Versus 2.0 MT 160 hp: +13 hp, +30 Nm, −1.2 s, −3 km/h top speed, +1.3 mixed. 2.2 AT 173 hp: 10.8 s; city/highway/mixed not measured; vmax not measured.

Pre-restyle Diesels. 2.0 MT 109 hp: 14.6 s, 174 km/h, mixed 7.2. 2.0 AT 109 hp is the slowest C8: 16.6 s, 168 km/h, mixed 8.0. 2.0 MT 120 hp and 2.0 AT 120 hp share 12.9 s and 180 km/h; mixed 6.9 (MT) vs 6.8 (AT) — here the Automatic 4 is 0.1 better mixed than the Manual 6, unlike the restyle 160 hp pair. 2.2 MT 128 hp and 2.2 MT 130 hp: both 13.6 s, 182 km/h, mixed 7.4. The 2 hp gap does not show in the stopwatch or the fuel figures.

Gasoline vs Diesel at ~2.0 litres. Restyle 2.0 MT 143 hp Gasoline: 11.6 s, 188 km/h, mixed 9.0. Versus restyle 2.0 MT 160 hp Diesel: Gasoline is 0.4 s slower, 15 km/h slower on vmax, 3.1 l/100 km thirstier mixed, and has 140 Nm less (200 vs 340). Pre-restyle 2.0 MT 138 hp Gasoline: 12.2 s, 185 km/h, mixed 9.1. 2.0 AT 138 hp: same 12.2 s, vmax 178 km/h, mixed 9.1. 2.0 MT 140 hp: 11.6 s, 188 km/h, mixed 9.0 — same sprint as restyle 143 hp Gasoline.

2.2 MT 158 hp Gasoline (pre-restyle only, 2231 cc): 11.6 s, 196 km/h, mixed 9.7. Versus restyle 2.2 MT 173 hp Diesel: +1.6 s, −4 km/h, +2.5 mixed, 217 Nm vs 370 Nm.

3.0 V-shaped six. Pre-restyle 3.0 AT 204 hp and 3.0 AT 208 hp: both 11.0 s, 205 km/h, mixed 11.5. Restyle 3.0 AT 210 hp: 11.0 s, 205 km/h, mixed 11.5+6 hp vs 204 does not change those three figures. Restyle 3.0 MT 210 hp: 0–100, vmax and all consumption not measured. Mixed 11.5 is 5.6 l/100 km above restyle 2.0 MT 160 hp Diesel; sprint is only 0.2 s better than that Diesel’s 11.2 s.

Range from the 80 l tank (tank ÷ mixed × 100, where mixed is measured): restyle 2.0 MT 160 hp ≈ 1356 km; restyle 2.0 MT 122 hp ≈ 1159 km; restyle 2.2 MT 173 hp ≈ 1111 km; restyle 3.0 AT 210 hp ≈ 696 km; pre-restyle 2.0 AT 120 hp ≈ 1176 km; 3.0 AT 204/208 hp ≈ 696 km.

CO2 is not measured on every version. Eco class is Euro 5 only on restyle 2.0 MT 160 hp and 2.0 AT 160 hp; all others not measured.

Dimensions and weight

Ground clearance 140 mm and tank 80 l do not change. Wheels not measured.

Kerb / gross (kg), where measured:

Payload implied by gross − kerb where both exist: restyle 2.0 MT 160 hp 692 kg; restyle 2.0 MT 122 hp 794 kg; restyle 2.2 MT 173 hp 780 kg; restyle 3.0 AT 210 hp 755 kg; pre-restyle 2.0 MT 138 hp Gasoline 770 kg; pre-restyle 2.0 MT 109 hp 795 kg. The strongest 2.0 Diesel carries 102 kg less payload than the 122 hp row because kerb rose while gross stayed 2530.

Front suspension is Independent, spring on all. Rear is Semi-independent, springorts hélicoïdaux, sem on most rows; Semi-independent, torsion on pre-restyle 2.0 AT 109 hp, 2.2 MT 130 hp and 3.0 AT 208 hp. Front brakes: restyle Disc; pre-restyle Ventilated disc. Rear: Disc throughout.

Power per litre (hp ÷ litres): restyle 2.0 MT 160 hp 80.1 hp/l (highest); restyle 2.2 MT 173 hp 79.4; restyle 2.0 MT 138 hp 69.1; restyle 2.0 MT 122 hp 61.1; pre-restyle 2.0 MT 109 hp 54.6 (lowest); restyle 3.0 AT 210 hp 71.3; 2.2 MT 158 hp Gasoline 70.8.

Which version to choose

Default buy: restyle 2.0 MT 160 hp Diesel. Highest hp/l (80.1), lowest mixed fuel (5.9), longest calculated tank range (~1356 km), Euro 5, 203 km/h, 11.2 s. You give up 102 kg of payload vs the 122 hp sister and 1.2 s vs 2.2 MT 173 hp.

If you want the Automatic on that engine: 2.0 AT 160 hp. Same 160 hp / 340 Nm / Euro 5, 6 gears, 11.1 s. Mixed 7.2 instead of 5.9. Kerb and vmax not measured. Do not confuse it with restyle 2.0 AT 143 hp Gasoline (Automatic 4, 12.0 s, consumption not measured).

If the stopwatch is the only score: restyle 2.2 MT 173 hp. 10.0 s, 370 Nm at 1500 rpm, 10.3 kg/hp. Mixed 7.2 equals the 2.0 AT 160 hp, not the 2.0 MT 160 hp. Gross 2570. 2.2 AT 173 hp is 0.8 s slower and has no measured mpg.

If you stay in 2002–2007: 2.0 AT 120 hp or 2.0 MT 120 hp. 12.9 s / 180 km/h, mixed 6.8 (AT) or 6.9 (MT). That AT is the rare case where the automatic is not the thirstier box. Avoid 2.0 AT 109 hp unless you accept 16.6 s and 8.0 mixed. 2.2 MT 128 hp and 2.2 MT 130 hp add displacement and 314 Nm but 13.6 s and 7.4 mixed — they do not beat the 120 hp 2.0 on speed or fuel.

Gasoline only if Diesel is off the table. Lightest kerbs (1610–1650 kg on the 2.0/2.2 Gasoline manuals). Mixed 9.0–9.7 vs Diesel 5.9–7.4. Restyle 2.0 MT 143 hp matches pre-restyle 2.0 MT 140 hp on 11.6 s / 188 km/h / 9.0 mixed. 2.2 MT 158 hp is the Gasoline with the highest vmax among 4-cylinder rows (196 km/h) and still trails restyle Diesel 160 hp on fuel by 3.8 l/100 km.

Do not buy the 3.0 for speed. 3.0 AT 204 / 208 / 210 hp all 11.0 s / 205 km/h / 11.5 mixed — 0.2 s and 2 km/h better than restyle 2.0 MT 160 hp Diesel at nearly double the mixed fuel. 3.0 MT 210 hp cannot be judged on sprint or mpg: those fields are not measured. Peak listed power is 210 hp, not a measured advantage in 0–100.

Manual vs Automatic rule of thumb from these rows. Restyle Diesel Automatic 6 at 160 hp costs 1.3 l/100 km mixed vs the Manual. Pre-restyle Diesel Automatic 4 at 109 hp costs 0.8 mixed and 2.0 s. Pre-restyle Diesel Automatic 4 at 120 hp is 0.1 better mixed than the Manual. Gasoline Automatic 4 at 138 hp matches the Manual’s 12.2 s and 9.1 mixed but loses 7 km/h vmax (178 vs 185).

What restyling changed in arithmetic, not marketing. Diesel ceiling rose from 130 hp / 314 Nm to 173 hp / 370 Nm. Best mixed Diesel fell from 6.8 (pre-restyle 2.0 AT 120 hp) to 5.9 (restyle 2.0 MT 160 hp). Fastest measured 0–100 fell from 11.0 s (3.0 AT) to 10.0 s (2.2 MT 173 hp) — the six no longer holds the sprint title once the 2.2 Diesel exists. Gasoline 2.0 went 138/140 hp143 hp with the same 11.6 s / 9.0 mixed on the 140 and 143 manuals. 3.0 AT output 204/208210 hp with unchanged 11.0 s / 205 km/h / 11.5. Front brakes in the restyle table are labelled Disc; pre-restyle fronts are Ventilated disc. Clearance, tank, FWD and Minivan body did not move.

Reliability and problems. This dataset has no failure rates, no service intervals and no owner-fault counts. What it does fix is the load each engine carries: 15.7 kg/hp on 2.0 MT 109 hp versus 10.3 kg/hp on 2.2 MT 173 hp and 8.5 kg/hp on restyle 3.0 AT 210 hp. Torque available below 2000 rpm is a Diesel trait here (270–370 Nm); Gasoline fours make 190–217 Nm near 3900–4100 rpm. If the van is used loaded toward the 2530–2570 kg gross, the 340–370 Nm restyle Diesels have a larger measured torque margin than any Gasoline 4.

Short map. Daily distance, Diesel, Manual → restyle 2.0 MT 160 hp. Same engine, Automatic → 2.0 AT 160 hp. Fastest → 2.2 MT 173 hp. Pre-2008 Diesel → 2.0 AT 120 hp or 2.0 MT 120 hp. Lightest → 2.0 MT 138 hp Gasoline (1610 kg). Peak hp → 3.0 MT / 3.0 AT 210 hp, knowing mixed 11.5 (AT) and that the MT’s performance is not measured.
