Citroen C5 Aircross: which generation to choose

If you need a 6-speed Manual, you are choosing inside 1 generation only. If you need a measured 0–100 under 9.0 s, you stay on 1 generation or the restyling: 2 generation’s only timed car is 1.2 i AT Hybrid at 11.2 s, and 1.6 i AT 0–100 is not measured.

1 generation (April 2017–January 2022) is the only period with eight named versions, both Manual and Automatic, and both Gasoline and Diesel plus one Plug-in. Body is SUV 5-doors, drive is FWD on every version. Ground clearance is measured only here, and only on two cars: 1.6L Puretech AT (180 hp) 230 mm and 1.5L BlueHDi AT (130 hp) 230 mm.

1 generation, restyling 1 (from February 2022; 1.6 Puretech AT 180 hp listed until 30 June 2023, the other five versions with stop not measured) does not add a new body. It drops the two Manual names, drops 1.5 BlueHDi MT and 1.5L BlueHDi AT, and adds 1.5 AT (130 hp, Diesel). Three names still collide as 1.6 Puretech AT: 150 hp Gasoline, 180 hp Gasoline, 225 hp Plug-in.

2 generation (from July 2025) is two versions only. Rear suspension changes from Semi-independent, spring to Independent, spring. Gearbox labels change from Automatic / Manual to Robotic. Diesel disappears from the measured list.

Which version to buy: decision by use

Daily city, lowest mixed Gasoline, Manual. 1.2 Puretech MT (1 generation): 130 hp, 230 Nm, 1490 kg, 5.3 mixed, 140 g/km CO2, Euro 6, 10.5 s. Versus 1.2 Puretech AT you lose the 8-speed Automatic and 0.2 s (10.5 vs 10.3) but you keep city 6.1 / highway 4.9 that the automatic does not measure, and you stay 1490 kg instead of restyling 1.2 Puretech AT at 1559 kg.

Daily city, Automatic, 130 hp Gasoline. 1.2 Puretech AT (1 generation): same engine as the Manual, 8 gears, 10.3 s, 6.7 mixed, 151 g/km. Restyling 1.2 Puretech AT is the same 10.3 s and 6.7 mixed but 69 kg heavier and bore 77 mm instead of 75 mm. There is no 1.2 Manual after January 2022.

High mileage, Manual Diesel. 1.5 BlueHDi MT: lightest C5 Aircross in the data (1430 kg), 300 Nm at 1750 rpm, 10.4 s, 5.4 mixed, 109 g/km, 53 L tank. Versus 1.2 Puretech MT you trade 60 kg less mass and 70 Nm more (300 vs 230) for Diesel fuel and 1 km/h less top speed wait: 189 vs 195. Versus 1.5L BlueHDi AT you save 185 kg (1430 vs 1615), pick up 0.2 s (10.4 vs 10.6), and keep mixed 5.4 identical; the automatic adds 6 Nm (306 vs 300) and 615 kg payload versus 570 kg.

High mileage, Automatic Diesel, restyling. 2.0 HDi AT restyling: 180 hp, 400 Nm (peak torque on the whole model), 8.6 s, mixed 4.9 versus 6.7 on the same-named 1 generation car — 1.8 L/100 km. City 5.3 versus 8.1. Same 1540 / 2110 kg. If the restyling diesel is available, the numbers say it is the same engine output with a lower listed burn. 1.5 AT restyling is the 130 hp Diesel automatic that replaced 1.5L BlueHDi AT: torque falls from 306 to 235 Nm (−71 Nm), mixed 5.3 versus 5.4, CO2 139 versus 108, kerb 1567 versus 1615 kg. Buy 1.5 AT if you want 130 hp Diesel Automatic after 2022; buy earlier 1.5L BlueHDi AT if you want 306 Nm and 108 g/km.

Towing / payload. 1.5L BlueHDi AT 615 kg payload and 2230 kg gross. 2.0 HDi AT 570 kg payload with 400 Nm. Plug-in 225 hp payload is only 455 kg because kerb is 1845 kg against 2300 kg gross.

Performance Gasoline without Plug-in. 1.6L Puretech AT (180 hp) on 1 generation: 8.2 s, 216 km/h, 8.36 kg/hp, 6.9 mixed, 132 g/km, Euro 6, 230 mm clearance (one of two measured). Restyling 1.6 Puretech AT (180 hp): same 8.2 s, 219 km/h, mixed 5.3 (1.6 L/100 km less), CO2 139, clearance not measured, listed only to 30 June 2023. Versus 1.6 Puretech AT (150 hp) you gain 30 hp, 15 Nm, 0.9 s, 18–21 km/h, and (on 1 generation) a drop from 7.9 to 6.9 mixed — the 150 hp car is not the economy choice; it is the 6-speed Automatic 1.6 with the highest Gasoline mixed figure (7.9) and 179 g/km.

Plug-in (PHEV). 1 generation name is 1.6L Puretech AT (225 hp); restyling name is 1.6 Puretech AT (225 hp). Same 225 hp, 367 Nm, 8.2 s, 216 km/h, 1.4 mixed, 132 g/km, 1845 / 2300 kg. Restyling adds wheel sizes that 1 generation Plug-in left not measured. You pay 340 kg versus 1.6L Puretech AT 180 hp (1845 vs 1505) for 45 hp and a 1.4 versus 6.9 mixed figure. 0–100 does not improve: both 8.2 s. 2 generation 1.6 i AT is 195 hp Plug-in — 30 hp below the earlier Plug-in — Robotic 7, FWD; Nm, 0–100, top speed, consumption, CO2, masses, tank, wheels, cylinders, boost, clearance all not measured. Do not treat 1.6 i AT as a documented upgrade on performance or economy; the sheet does not measure those fields.

2 generation if you want the new chassis. Only 1.2 i AT Hybrid is fully enough to compare: 145 hp, 230 Nm, 1199 cc, 3 Inline, Turbo, Robotic 6, FWD, 11.2 s, 201 km/h, 6.2 mixed, 126 g/km, 1554 / 2100 kg, 55 L, 225/60 R18 or 225/55 R19, Independent spring both ends. Versus 1.2 Puretech AT (1 generation) you gain 15 hp and 13 km/h (201 vs 188), lose 0.9 s to 100, add 64 kg, cut mixed 6.7 to 6.2, and change Automatic 8 for Robotic 6. It is not quicker; it is slightly thirstier than 1.2 Puretech MT (6.2 vs 5.3) with no Manual option.

Engine options that look similar and are not

Three 1.6 Puretech AT names on restyling: 150 hp / 6-speed / 9.1 s / 7.9 mixed / 179 g/km; 180 hp / 8-speed / 8.2 s / 5.3 mixed / 219 km/h; 225 hp Plug-in / 8-speed / 8.2 s / 1.4 mixed / 1845 kg. Linking or ordering by name alone will mix three different cars.

Two 1.6L Puretech AT names on 1 generation: 180 hp Gasoline versus 225 hp Plug-in. Same 8.2 s; 340 kg and 112 Nm apart (255 vs 367).

1.5 BlueHDi MT, 1.5L BlueHDi AT, and 1.5 AT are all 130 hp Diesel FWD, but torque is 300 / 306 / 235 Nm and kerb is 1430 / 1615 / 1567 kg.

1.2 Puretech MT and 1.2 Puretech AT share 130 hp and 230 Nm; gearbox is the difference, plus mixed 5.3 versus 6.7.

Problems, reliability, oil, warning lights

This catalogue does not measure engine problems, oil type, oil grade, engine-management-light causes, temperature-warning causes, or fault-repair rates for any C5 Aircross version. Those searches have no numbers here. What is measured: every listed engine is Turbo where boost is filled; 1.6 i AT boost is not measured. Fuel is 95 on Gasoline and Plug-in versions, Diesel on Diesel versions.

Spec sheet recap for a buyer

All Citroen C5 Aircross versions in this data are SUV 5-doors and FWD. 1 generation (2017–2022) is the only place to buy 1.2 Puretech MT or 1.5 BlueHDi MT. Restyling (from 2022) is where 2.0 HDi AT mixed consumption is 4.9 instead of 6.7. 2 generation (from 2025) is 1.2 i AT Hybrid or 1.6 i AT, with Independent rear spring and Robotic gearboxes, and with 1.6 i AT largely not measured.

Choose 1.5 BlueHDi MT for lowest kerb and a 5.4 mixed Diesel Manual; 2.0 HDi AT restyling for 400 Nm and 4.9 mixed Automatic Diesel; 1.6L Puretech AT (180 hp) or restyling 1.6 Puretech AT (180 hp) for 8.2 s without Plug-in mass; Plug-in 1.6L Puretech AT (225 hp) / 1.6 Puretech AT (225 hp) for 1.4 mixed at 1845 kg; 1.2 i AT Hybrid only if you specifically want 2 generation hardware and accept 11.2 s. Do not choose 1.6 i AT on performance or mpg claims — those fields are not measured.
