BMW iX: Which Version Should You Buy?

The BMW iX version to choose depends primarily on how much performance you want and whether you prefer the original spring-suspension specification or the restyled model’s pneumatic suspension. BMW iX generations and versions

The first BMW iX generation entered production in July 2021 as an SUV 5-doors and initially included three versions. The xDrive40 76.6 kWh produces 326 hp and 630 Nm, the xDrive50 111.5 kWh produces 523 hp and 765 Nm, and the M60 111.5 kWh, available from January 2022, produces 619 hp and 1,100 Nm. All three use independent spring suspension at the front and rear.

The first-generation restyling began in January 2025 and remains an SUV 5-doors, but its two listed versions use independent pneumatic suspension at both ends. The i20 AT develops 408 hp and 700 Nm, while the i60 xDrive AT develops 544 hp and 765 Nm. This restyling belongs to the first generation rather than representing a separate generation.

BMW iX engine specs, horsepower and torque

The xDrive50 111.5 kWh adds 197 hp and 135 Nm over the xDrive40 76.6 kWh. The M60 111.5 kWh adds a further 96 hp and 335 Nm over the xDrive50 111.5 kWh, making torque its largest numerical advantage.

Within the restyled range, the i60 xDrive AT provides 136 hp and 65 Nm more than the i20 AT. Compared with the original xDrive50 111.5 kWh, the i60 xDrive AT has 21 hp more, the same 765 Nm, and the same stated acceleration time.

The xDrive50 111.5 kWh reaches 100 km/h 1.2 seconds sooner than the xDrive40 76.6 kWh, although both have a 200 km/h top speed. Moving from xDrive50 111.5 kWh to M60 111.5 kWh saves another 0.8 seconds and raises top speed by 50 km/h.

For the restyled versions, the i60 xDrive AT is 0.5 seconds quicker to 100 km/h than the i20 AT, while both are limited to the same stated 200 km/h. The original M60 111.5 kWh remains the fastest listed choice: it is 0.8 seconds quicker to 100 km/h than i60 xDrive AT and has a top speed 50 km/h higher.

The xDrive40 76.6 kWh is the lightest version. The xDrive50 111.5 kWh weighs 145 kg more, while the M60 111.5 kWh adds another 74 kg. Despite those increases, the extra output improves the approximate kerb-weight-to-power ratio from 7.25 kg per hp in xDrive40 76.6 kWh to 4.80 kg per hp in xDrive50 111.5 kWh and 4.17 kg per hp in M60 111.5 kWh.

The restyled i20 AT carries approximately 6.00 kg per hp, whereas i60 xDrive AT reduces that to approximately 4.60 kg per hp. The i60 xDrive AT is only 55 kg heavier than i20 AT while adding 136 hp, which explains its 0.5-second acceleration advantage.

Ground clearance is 203 mm for every original version. It is not measured for the restyled versions, so the change to pneumatic suspension should not be interpreted as proof of greater or lesser clearance.

Which BMW iX version should you buy?

Choose xDrive40 76.6 kWh if the lowest kerb weight matters more than maximum output. At 2,365 kg, it is 145 kg lighter than xDrive50 111.5 kWh and 219 kg lighter than M60 111.5 kWh. Its 326 hp, 630 Nm and 5.8-second 0–100 km/h time are the lowest performance figures in the original range, but it shares their AWD layout, one-speed Automatic gearbox, 203 mm clearance and independent spring suspension.

Choose xDrive50 111.5 kWh for the strongest numerical middle ground in the original lineup. It cuts 1.2 seconds from the xDrive40 76.6 kWh acceleration time while retaining the same 200 km/h top speed. Its 523 hp and 765 Nm are also close to the restyled i60 xDrive AT, which has 21 hp more but identical torque and an identical 4.6-second 0–100 km/h result.

Choose M60 111.5 kWh when outright performance is the priority. Its 619 hp and 1,100 Nm are the highest outputs in the catalogue, while its 3.8-second acceleration time and 250 km/h top speed are also the best listed figures. It is the heaviest version at 2,584 kg, yet it still has the best weight-to-power ratio.

Choose i20 AT if you want the restyled specification and pneumatic suspension without selecting its higher-output version. It has 408 hp and 700 Nm, reaches 100 km/h in 5.1 seconds and weighs 2,450 kg. Compared with xDrive40 76.6 kWh, it adds 82 hp and 70 Nm, is 85 kg heavier, and reaches 100 km/h 0.7 seconds sooner.

Choose i60 xDrive AT if you want the best combination of restyled specification and acceleration. Its 544 hp represents a 136 hp increase over i20 AT, while kerb weight rises by only 55 kg. It matches xDrive50 111.5 kWh at 765 Nm and 4.6 seconds to 100 km/h, but uses the restyled range’s pneumatic suspension rather than the original version’s spring suspension.

Prices, electric range, charging figures, dimensions and measured consumption are not provided, so they cannot support the choice. On the available numbers alone, xDrive50 111.5 kWh is the balanced original version, M60 111.5 kWh is the performance leader, i20 AT is the lighter restyled option, and i60 xDrive AT is the stronger restyled choice.
