Which DB11 version to choose

All four versions sit in one generation and one Cabrio body, so generation-hopping is not a lever. The choice is engine size, output, mass, and whether fuel use is measured.

All four versions sit in one generation and one Cabrio body, so generation-hopping is not a lever. The choice is engine size, output, mass, and whether fuel use is measured.

The two 4.0 AT cars are not interchangeable: same name, same 510 hp, different start date, mass, 0–100, CO2 and whether consumption is measured. The two 5.2 AT cars are not interchangeable either: same name, 31 hp apart (639 − 608), 0.2 s and 12 km/h apart on the sprint and top speed.

Generations: what one generation actually changed

There is 1 generation. It starts 2016-05-01, stop is not measured, body is Cabrio, and it lists 4 versions.

Inside that generation the calendar still splits the set. Three versions start 2016-05-01: 5.2 AT (639 hp), 4.0 AT (510 hp, 1760 kg), 5.2 AT (608 hp). One version starts 2017-10-01: 4.0 AT (510 hp, 1812 kg). That later 4.0 AT is 52 kg heavier than the 2016 4.0 AT (1812 − 1760), 0.1 s slower to 100 km/h (4.1 versus 4.0), and 25 g/km higher in CO2 (255 versus 230). Peak power, torque, displacement, gearbox, drive, tank, ground clearance and wheels do not change between those two 4.0 AT rows.

No restyling is recorded as a separate generation. Treating the 2017-10-01 4.0 AT as a new generation would invent a second generation the data does not contain.

Engine options and specs

Both engines are Gasoline, Turbo, Front, longitudinal, Direct injection (direct), V-shaped, 4 valves per cylinder, fuel 98, Automatic, 8 speeds, RWD.

4.0 AT (both 510 hp rows): 3982 cc, 8 cylinders, 510 hp (375 kW) at 6000 rpm, 675 Nm at 2000–5000 rpm, compression 10.5, bore × stroke 83 × 92.

5.2 AT (608 hp): 5204 cc, 12 cylinders, 608 hp (447 kW) at 6500 rpm, 700 Nm at 1500–5000 rpm, compression 9.2, bore × stroke not measured.

5.2 AT (639 hp): 5204 cc, 12 cylinders, 639 hp (470 kW) at 6500 rpm, 700 Nm at 1500–5000 rpm, compression 9.3, bore × stroke not measured.

Displacement gap: 5204 − 3982 = 1222 cc. Torque gap from either 4.0 AT to either 5.2 AT: 700 − 675 = 25 Nm. The 12-cylinder versions make peak torque from 1500 rpm; the 8-cylinder versions from 2000 rpm. Horsepower per litre (hp ÷ displacement in litres): 4.0 AT 510 / 3.982 ≈ 128.1 hp/l; 5.2 AT (608 hp) 608 / 5.204 ≈ 116.8 hp/l; 5.2 AT (639 hp) 639 / 5.204 ≈ 122.8 hp/l. The smaller engine is the densest; the extra 1222 cc buys cylinders and peak power, not specific output.

Horsepower, 0–100, top speed and fuel (mpg figures as given)

Performance order by 0–100 km/h: 5.2 AT (639 hp) 3.7 s; 5.2 AT (608 hp) 3.9 s; 4.0 AT (2016, 1760 kg) 4.0 s; 4.0 AT (2017, 1812 kg) 4.1 s. Spreads: 0.2 s between the two 5.2 AT rows; 0.1 s between the two 4.0 AT rows; 0.4 s from the slowest 4.0 AT to the fastest 5.2 AT (4.1 − 3.7).

Top speed: 5.2 AT (639 hp) 334 km/h; 5.2 AT (608 hp) 322 km/h (12 km/h less); both 4.0 AT rows 299 km/h (35 km/h below 334, 23 km/h below 322). Power gaps: 639 − 608 = 31 hp; 608 − 510 = 98 hp; 639 − 510 = 129 hp.

Consumption, city / highway / mixed:

Mixed gap from the measured 4.0 AT to either 5.2 AT: 11.4 − 9.9 = 1.5. City gap: 16.6 − 13.5 = 3.1. Highway gap: 8.5 − 7.9 = 0.6. The two 5.2 AT versions match on fuel and on CO2 (265). The 2016 4.0 AT is 230 CO2; the 2017 4.0 AT is 255 CO2 — 25 more than the lighter 4.0 AT, 10 less than either 5.2 AT (265 − 255). Euro 6 on all four. Oil capacity is not measured on any version.

Weight kg, dimensions, tank, clearance, wheels

Kerb weight: 4.0 AT (2016) 1760 kg; 5.2 AT (639 hp) 1765 kg; 5.2 AT (608 hp) 1770 kg; 4.0 AT (2017) 1812 kg. Gross weight is not measured on all four. Weight distribution is not measured on all four. Length is not measured on all four.

The 2017 4.0 AT is the heaviest DB11 in the data and the only version whose kerb mass sits well above the 12-cylinder pair. Versus the 2016 4.0 AT: +52 kg. Versus 5.2 AT (639 hp): +47 kg (1812 − 1765). Versus 5.2 AT (608 hp): +42 kg (1812 − 1770). The 639 hp 5.2 AT is 5 kg lighter than the 608 hp 5.2 AT (1770 − 1765) and 5 kg heavier than the 2016 4.0 AT (1765 − 1760).

kg per hp: 2016 4.0 AT 1760 / 510 ≈ 3.45; 2017 4.0 AT 1812 / 510 ≈ 3.55; 5.2 AT (608 hp) 1770 / 608 ≈ 2.91; 5.2 AT (639 hp) 1765 / 639 ≈ 2.76. The 639 hp car carries the least mass per horsepower; the later 4.0 AT carries the most.

Shared chassis numbers: tank 78 L, ground clearance 80, wheels 255/40 R20 and 295/30 R20, Independent, spring front and rear, Ventilated disc front, Disc ventilated rear.

What the extra engine size and extra horsepower buy

Moving from either 4.0 AT to 5.2 AT (608 hp) adds 98 hp, 25 Nm, 4 cylinders, 1222 cc, 0.1–0.2 s on 0–100 km/h depending on which 4.0 AT is the baseline (4.0 − 3.9 or 4.1 − 3.9), and 23 km/h of top speed (322 − 299). Mixed fuel, where both sides are measured, rises by 1.5; city by 3.1. Kerb weight versus the 2016 4.0 AT rises by 10 kg (1770 − 1760); versus the 2017 4.0 AT it falls by 42 kg.

Moving from 5.2 AT (608 hp) to 5.2 AT (639 hp) adds 31 hp at the same 700 Nm and the same 16.6 / 8.5 / 11.4 consumption and 265 CO2. Compression goes from 9.2 to 9.3. 0–100 km/h improves by 0.2 s; top speed by 12 km/h; kerb weight falls by 5 kg. That is the only comparison in which more power, a shorter sprint, a higher top speed and less mass arrive together without a measured fuel penalty.

Staying on 4.0 AT and picking the 2016-05-01 row instead of the 2017-10-01 row keeps 510 hp and 675 Nm, cuts 52 kg, cuts 0.1 s to 100 km/h, cuts 25 g/km CO2, and is the only 4.0 AT with measured 13.5 / 7.9 / 9.9 consumption. The 2017 row is the same engine on paper and the heaviest Cabrio in the set.

If the search is “DB11 V12 horsepower”, the data answers with two numbers, not one: 608 hp and 639 hp, both on 5.2 AT. If the search is “DB11 V8 horsepower”, both 4.0 AT versions are 510 hp. Cabrio in this generation is the body that maps to convertible / Volante searches; no second body type is listed.
