Aito M5: which version to buy

If you are choosing an Aito M5 rather than reading a first-look, the split is simple. From December 2021 the 5-door SUV is sold as AT in four powertrains. From April 2024 the restyling of the same generation keeps one AT and adds two 1.5h AT versions. The names collide: two AT cars make 496 hp, two make 272 hp, and two 1.5h AT cars also sit at 272 hp and 496 hp.

The only way to pick is by the numbers next to each name — horsepower, newton-metres, drive, 0–100, kerb weight — not by the badge.

This article does not restate what the M5 is. It compares the seven listed versions and what the restyling actually changed.

Engine type labels in the data: the two 1498 AT cars are Plug-in; the 272/496 AT Electro cars and all three restyling cars are Electro — even the two 1.5h AT cars, which also list 95 fuel, 1499 displacement, Turbo, 4 cylinders, 4 valves per cylinder, Distributed injection (multi-point), compression ratio 15, and bore × stroke 73.5 x 88.32.

Horsepower and motor: what 272 vs 428 vs 496 actually buys

Across the catalogue the Aito M5 horsepower set is three values: 272, 428, 496.

Torque is measured only on Electro / restyling cars:

On the Plug-in AT cars, displacement is 1498. Specific output:

On restyling 1.5h AT, displacement is 1499 (1 cc more):

The 496 hp Plug-in AT and the 496 hp 1.5h AT land on the same specific output (~331 hp/l). The 272 hp 1.5h AT is the least power-dense of the cars that have a displacement figure.

Boost is not measured on generation-1 AT. On both 1.5h AT cars it is Turbo. Cylinders and layout are not measured on the Electro AT cars; on Plug-in AT and on 1.5h AT they are 4, Inline, Front, transverse.

Aito M5 EV specs vs Plug-in vs 1.5h AT: drive, not the name

Drive is the second axis after power.

AWD (generation 1 only):

RWD:

The restyling dropped AWD from the listed set. The fastest restyling car, 1.5h AT (496 hp), is RWD. If you want AWD on an Aito M5, the data only lists it on generation-1 AT (428 hp), AT (496 hp, Plug-in), and AT (496 hp, Electro).

Fuel split:

Gearbox does not help you choose: every version is Automatic with 1 speed.

Performance: 0–100 and top speed, version by version

Measured 0–100 km/h:

Version0–100vs slowest (7.1 s)
AT (428 hp)not measured
AT (496 hp, Plug-in)4.4 s2.7 s quicker
AT (272 hp, Electro)7.1 sbaseline
AT (496 hp, Electro)4.5 s2.6 s quicker
AT (272 hp), restyling7.1 ssame as gen-1 272 Electro
1.5h AT (272 hp)7.1 ssame
1.5h AT (496 hp)4.3 s2.8 s quicker

The three 272 hp cars — AT (272 hp, Electro), restyling AT (272 hp), 1.5h AT (272 hp) — share 7.1 s. Adding the 1.5h hardware did not change that figure.

Among 496 hp cars:

AT (428 hp) has no 0–100 figure. You cannot place it between 272 and 496 on a stopwatch from this data.

Top speed:

So the restyling 1.5h AT (496 hp) is 0.2 s quicker to 100 than generation-1 AT (496 hp, Electro) but 10 slower at the top (200 vs 210), and it is RWD instead of AWD.

Mixed consumption is measured only on the two 1.5h AT cars: 2.2 for both. City and highway consumption are not measured on any version. CO2 is not measured on generation 1; on all three restyling versions it is 0.

Aito M5 weight, ground clearance, tank: only the restyling is measured

Kerb weight, gross weight, clearance, tank, and wheels are not measured on any generation-1 AT.

Restyling:

VersionKerbGrossPayload (gross − kerb)ClearanceTankWheelskg per hp
AT (272 hp)22352610375150not measurednot measured2235 / 272 ≈ 8.22
1.5h AT (272 hp)2220259537515056not measured2220 / 272 ≈ 8.16
1.5h AT (496 hp)23352710375150not measurednot measured2335 / 496 ≈ 4.71

All three restyling cars carry the same 375 payload and the same 150 ground clearance. Wheel sizes are not measured on any M5 in this data. Length and other dimensions are not measured.

1.5h AT (272 hp) is the lightest listed M5: 15 kg under restyling AT (272 hp) (2220 vs 2235) and 115 kg under 1.5h AT (496 hp) (2220 vs 2335). The 496 hp 1.5h AT is 100 kg heavier than restyling AT (272 hp) (2335 vs 2235).

Power-to-weight on the restyling:

The only measured tank is 56 on 1.5h AT (272 hp). On 1.5h AT (496 hp) and on every AT, tank is not measured.

Chassis: what the restyling changed besides the powertrain list

Front and rear suspension are Independent, spring on every version in both periods.

Brakes:

The restyling is the only place rear brakes are listed as Disc ventilated. Clearance 150 appears only after April 2024. AWD disappears from the listed restyling set. The 1.5h AT name appears only after restyling.

Aito M5 vs Aito M5: buy matrix by job

If you want the quickest measured 0–100: 1.5h AT (496 hp) at 4.3 s. It is 0.1 s ahead of AT (496 hp, Plug-in) and 0.2 s ahead of AT (496 hp, Electro). Cost of that choice versus the 272 hp cars: 224 hp more, 315 Nm more (675 vs 360), 2.8 s less to 100, 115 kg more kerb than 1.5h AT (272 hp), RWD not AWD, top speed 200 not 210, tank not measured.

If you want AWD: stay on generation 1. The only AWD versions are AT (428 hp), AT (496 hp, Plug-in), and AT (496 hp, Electro). Restyling has no AWD in the data.

If you want AWD and a measured 0–100: AT (496 hp, Plug-in) at 4.4 s or AT (496 hp, Electro) at 4.5 s. The Plug-in is 0.1 s quicker; the Electro is the only AWD car with measured torque (675 Nm) and the only car with top speed 210. Displacement 1498 and 95 fuel apply to the Plug-in; Electro fuel and no displacement apply to the Electro.

If you want AWD without committing to 496 hp: AT (428 hp) is the only mid-power AWD. It is 68 hp below the 496 cluster and 156 hp above 272. 0–100, top speed, torque, kerb weight, tank, and clearance are not measured — you are buying the 428 / 314 / AWD / 1498 / Plug-in / 95 combination, not a stopwatch figure.

If you want the lightest measured car, a tank figure, and 2.2 mixed use: 1.5h AT (272 hp) — 2220 kg, tank 56, mixed 2.2, 7.1 s, 200 top speed, RWD, 360 Nm, Turbo, 1499, 95. Versus restyling AT (272 hp) it is 15 kg lighter, adds the 56 tank and 2.2 mixed figure, and keeps the same 272 hp / 7.1 s / 200 / RWD / 360 Nm. Versus 1.5h AT (496 hp) it gives up 224 hp, 315 Nm, and 2.8 s of 0–100, and it is 115 kg lighter with the only measured tank.

If you want Electro fuel and no 1.5h label after restyling: restyling AT (272 hp) — 272 hp, 360 Nm, RWD, 7.1 s, 200, kerb 2235, gross 2610, clearance 150, CO2 0, rear Disc ventilated. Same sprint as generation-1 AT (272 hp, Electro); the restyling adds measured mass and clearance and the ventilated rear discs. Generation-1 AT (272 hp, Electro) has no kerb, gross, clearance, or CO2 figure.

If you want 496 hp and Electro fuel with AWD: only AT (496 hp, Electro) — 675 Nm, 4.5 s, 210, Automatic 1, AWD. Weight not measured.

If you want 496 hp and 95 fuel with AWD: only AT (496 hp, Plug-in) — 1498, 4 Inline, Front, transverse, 4.4 s, torque not measured, top speed not measured.

If you want 496 hp after April 2024: only 1.5h AT (496 hp) — Turbo, 1499, 4 valves per cylinder, compression 15, 73.5 x 88.32, 675 Nm, 4.3 s, 200, mixed 2.2, RWD, kerb 2335, gross 2710, clearance 150, tank not measured.

What extra output buys, in arithmetic

From any 272 hp car to any 496 hp car: +224 hp, +164 kW. Where torque is measured, +315 Nm. Where 0–100 is measured, you leave 7.1 s and arrive at 4.3–4.5 s (a 2.6–2.8 s cut). On the restyling, you also pick up 115 kg of kerb from 1.5h AT (272 hp) to 1.5h AT (496 hp) and you keep payload at 375 and clearance at 150. Mixed 2.2 does not change between the two 1.5h AT cars — the extra 224 hp is not reflected in that consumption figure.

From AT (428 hp) to AT (496 hp, Plug-in): +68 hp, +50 kW, same 1498, same Plug-in, same 95, same AWD, same Automatic 1. You gain a measured 4.4 s 0–100; the 428 still has 0–100 not measured. Specific output rises from ≈286 to ≈331 hp/l.

From generation-1 AT (496 hp, Electro) to restyling 1.5h AT (496 hp): same 496 hp / 364 kW / 675 Nm; 0–100 improves 0.2 s (4.5 → 4.3); top speed drops 10 (210 → 200); drive changes AWD → RWD; fuel label Electro → 95 with a 1499 Turbo four; kerb becomes 2335 (was not measured).

From generation-1 AT (272 hp, Electro) to restyling AT (272 hp): power, torque, 0–100, top speed, RWD, Automatic 1, Electro fuel unchanged. You gain kerb 2235, gross 2610, clearance 150, CO2 0, and Disc ventilated rear brakes.

Do not treat missing figures as zero. AT (428 hp) is not “slow”; 0–100 is not measured. Generation-1 cars are not “lighter”; weight is not measured. Tank 56 exists only on 1.5h AT (272 hp). Wheel size is not measured on any version. Prices, markets, and equipment packs are not in this data — choose on hp, Nm, drive, 0–100, mass, and the exact names AT and 1.5h AT as listed.
